Brighton/ Palace late 70's early 80's

Recall a whole block of 50 brighton sitting up top in the aw stand! Pre-bought tickets and all at a discount thanks to a palace fan collecting up vouchers! The Palace tumbled the Brighton as they came through the turnstiles and it got a bit lively(nobody died) The lengths young frisky males go to for a dance

Palace never had the bottle to do that at our place , i did see a hand full turn up down at the Goldstone for a non Brighton /Palace fixture on one occasion, they got sussed at Hove station after the game and got OB protection

Went to a friendly up there. A few palace came in the away end. Remember one of their faces that day turning up at the play off match. Walking down Queens Road .Said hello using his name . Don't think he could quite believe being recognised. Mind you the police did!
Anyway back to that friendly not much happened inside but walk back to the station was eventful.

were you at East croydon after when Palace were waiting down the ramps on the station platform ,same lot that got in the away bit before the game

Palace never had the bottle to do that at our place , i did see a hand full turn up down at the Goldstone for a non Brighton /Palace fixture on one occasion, they got sussed at Hove station after the game and got OB protection

Brighton had quite a good record of getting in the home areas back then, one Watford away game sticks in the memory in particular. But you're right, I don't recall Palace ever attempting that at The Goldstone.

Apart from the odd one or two in north ,during early eighties they struggled to fill the pen on many occasions .

i got told by a Palace chap at the time that this was when Ron noads was in charge and was pissing palace fans off so they weren't bothering ,make what you want of that ,remember they had some poor turn outs around that time

Yep think he started at top of north ended up at bottom great view from my position in east, looked a right old mess .

He collapsed at the bottom of the North Stand about 5 feet away from me, I will never know to this day whether he was Palace or not but he was in a right old state.

mmmm a few of us were thinking of doing the same thing but were unsure of how many others had gone through the turnstiles,like you say Palace scattered but re grouped and run brighton to the bottom of the Holmsdale, remember some Palace on the roof of the AW as well

With our 10 and your 10 plus the other 20 or so inside their end we could have taken the Holmesdale and held it for a week.

I remember this, a sickening incident no matter how stupid he was to mouth off in the North. I think it's important that things like this are remembered for what they were, cowardly thuggery. That might sound hypocritical, but that's the realisation the vast majority of people who were involved in the troubles around those times did, or should, have come to eventually. Even during the running and posturing people sometimes got badly hurt, often outnumbered and without anyone coming to their aid. I was caught out like that by a few Newcastle fans once, and I don't mind admitting it was terrifying. Luckily I managed to get away and was a fast runner.

I don't see a problem talking about those times, remembering what happened, but I think those of us who were around then have a responsibility not to glamourise them to the younger generations. It was only the real sociopaths that got off on the real violence, the rest were mostly just hormonal teenagers enjoying a buzz, and I'd tell any teenager now that there are much better ways to get a buzz that kicking someone's teeth in.

I actually pulled a guy away from repeatedly kicking him whilst he was lying there at the bottom of the terrace.
Seeing a bloke covered in blood, battered and bruised lying on the ground near on unconscious with people still laying in the boot was enough for me.

25 of us mainly West Street went to Selhurst for their last game of the 83-84 season against Blackburn and went in what is now the Arthur Waite stand.

Being a bit lairy we were spotted by some lads in the stand opposite and one walked all the way round came up and offered to burn my eye out with his fag to which I suggested he got on with it rather than talking shite - tbh it was so long ago I cant remember what happened but I think plod suddenly woke up to who we were and got involved before throwing us out at HT!!
