Went to a friendly up there. A few palace came in the away end. Remember one of their faces that day turning up at the play off match. Walking down Queens Road .Said hello using his name . Don't think he could quite believe being recognised. Mind you the police did!
Anyway back to that friendly not much happened inside but walk back to the station was eventful.

That's reminds me . In the early eighties we were drinking in the sailor pre match when someone run in and said " there's weed by the clock tower " . So we all run out ( or so I though ) and run up to the tower to meet them , bad move , they saw us and run at us . We stopped to suss the situation and realised there was only about 9 of us there  well we did a bit of self presavation and scarped back to the sailor . I was fit then and managed to keep ahead of the chasing weed , when we reached the sailor the doors were shut but a quick bang on the door did the trick and we were in without a scratch baring a whack on the back of the head with a rolled up newspaper  . One of our lot showed his face 20 minutes later ,when it all died down , looking rather sheepish stating " I sorta hid "

I once heard a Palace fan got stabbed in the face with a screw driver outside Brighton station, they arrested the Brighton fan who did it by the finger prints on the screw driver. To this day I don't know if this actually happened or if it was just a story doing the rounds?

Your memory must be going. I can't remember Brighton being low key at home to Palarse at the Goldstone. Must have been held back at Hove station.

Yes the game in 1987 was very low key, I remember it well. 3 of us mingled in with the Palace mob after the game and walked back to Hove station with them. There were 200 of them hardly any police and absolutely no Brighton anywhere to be seen. Strange day really but I remember 1987 was the end of an era for football violence and was on the decline. 1988 picked up a little, for us anyway

That was a nasty day, loads of trouble inside and outside the ground. Our coach and the one in front got bricked after leaving the ground, remember the iconic sight of a Brighton lad with a white Pringle jumper wrapped around his head covered in blood from a nasty head wound. I got a face full of coins when we ran Palace outside the main stand after the game and one of my mates was knocked down by a police horse and was lucky to have not been seriously injured.

I went to all the early and mid 80s games home and away, and as some have said there was a lot of posturing and running around like tarts, but there was also a lot of very nasty stuff that I'm glad I don't see too often these days at football.

Would the face to the right of the policeman be a young Colin Swift by any chance? he just seems familiar.

I knew some faces that are in the picture but to put names to them now after all these years is nigh impossible. The only one I know very well is on the topish right.

I remember one time at smellhurst late 70s, the day was damp/rainey and I got on the terraces with friends and after a few minutes 4 or 5 police came over and threatened to throw me out because I had shoes that had blakeys in (metal tips in heel) unless I took them off. After a few moments complaining I was escorted to the police hut. When I took off my shoes the policeman in there smirked, there were all these DMs/boots and just my shoes. I don't think he could believe it as well. I spent the whole match with crisp packets on my feet to keep my socks/feet dry. That is another reason on a long list that I hate palarse.
