This thread seems to have just about run its course. I came to it late, but can I just ask you lot: On what planet did any of you take the "Brighton is the European centre of chemtrails" video in the first post seriously? Yes, the video above it in the first post is a genuine one from American fruitloops who believe in all that chemtrails rubbish. But the Brighton one, with its ludicrous graphics, silly "chemtrail silos" arrows, photos of a helicopter clearly not at Shoreham, and obviously doctored documents (it would have been easier to find a matching font than locate the deliberately jarring serif/sans ones used)? How could anyone with an IQ in double figures not instantly recognise the Brighton video as a parody of the chemtrail conspiracists? Yet still dozens of NSC's finest debated its contents as if they were being presented as genuine beliefs. WTF?

The only thing that interested me on watching that spoof vid was who made it and why. Well, call me Sherlock Holmes, but it look me less than two minutes on Youtube yesterday to work that one out. The Shoreham Airport video was posted by EUChemicalAlliance and redirects people (see the text at the end) to the user brightonchemtrails who now uses the name BR1GHT0NCH3MTRA1LZ2.

And what do you see when you click on BR1GHT0NCH3MTRA1LZ2 profile? The subtitle "Bob Dobbs Reporting" on the main video on that page. The graphic "Reporter Bob Dobbs" also appears a few seconds into many of the user's other chemtrail videos. Anyone with even the skimpiest knowledge of counter-culture will instantly recognise that as the callsign of the Church of Subgenius. To those who don't know, COSG is the world's most famous spoof religion (although FSM pushes it close these days).

The UK branch of COSG has long been run by a group of club-running druggy pranksters based in Brighton (hence the dreadful dance music on all their videos). Their HQ used to be a T-shirt factory behind London Road, but that closed a few years ago, and I don't know if they still have a physical base of operations. Either way, they do various wheezes to keep themselves entertained, such as standing for spoof parties in General Elections (I voted for them in 2001 & 2005). Clearly, spoofing the chemtrails numpties must be one of their current wheezes. It is after all not much of a jump from spoofing the bizarre irrational beliefs of religions to spoofing the bizarre irrational beliefs of conspiracy theorists.

The best parodies are the ones that people on both sides believe - check out the Landover Baptist Church forums for the best example of this, as both Christians and antis are taken in and end up arguing the toss with the sniggering proponents. In that respect, I think the Brighton Chemtrails parody is working well, with both genuine chemtrails delusionists and spittle-spewing opponents falling into line.

And in this case, there is a commercial element too. The COSG lot are as I said club promoters and their latest monthly all-nighter, which launched at the Concorde2 on Saturday just gone, is called... CHEMTRAILS. The flyer features photos of chemtrails in the sky and the same font used in the videos!

The internet holds up a mirror for us to view stupid people in, and in that respect NSC hasn't disappointed here. As for Falmer and co, I have no idea if they are COSG members/puppets in on the joke (I suspect they are, the timing - posting a two year old video a few days after the CHEMTRAILS club night's launch party - suggests a certain complicity) or genuinely stupid chemtrail believers, and it really doesn't matter. Either way they have managed to propagate the gag across well over 500 posts on NSC, and for that, if I had a hat, I'd doff it to them.

Essentially this entire thread is just an advert for a club night!
