Been known since Eratosthenes (276–194 BC) calculated the diameter of the earth from the length of shadows cast at different latitudes.

Wasn't damn close to working out the size of the earth?

His calculation of the circumference was to within 2% of modern measurements. And he managed it without leaving Egypt!
