Brighton Interested In Alsop?

I seem to remember McGhee being interested in Julian Alsop when he was with Milwall and Alsop was playing for Cheltenham (and knocking in the goals). He went on to sign McCammon instead, who is a similar kind of player (big target man).

He was today sacked by Oxford for "disciplinary reasons". Whatdya reckon the chances of Alsop signing for us are? More to the point, is he any good? I know he top scored for Cheltenham for a couple of seasons.

If he's cheap we'll have him.

We almost signed him instead of Zamora back in Adams reign.
Not interested. Personally I think he's good enough for this standard.

Had a great record at Cheltenham, but seems to struggle to get into the Oxford team so not sure what he could offer the Championship. Could be a great target man, but won't be much more than that to the team. Silky skills and Alsop are words that do not go together. Seem to remember causing us loads of problems when we played Cheltenham a few years back through his physical presence.

Hope not. He's a big lummox with a terrible first touch.

Handy in case it all kicks off though....

Wasn't he the one who fouled Walton when it kicked off against Swansea in 1999? He got sent off, then some nutters came out from the main stand onto the field and started racially abusing Mickey Bennett. I think one or two got jailed for it. I was very glad we had the security fence that night.

It says in the paper today, that he was sacked for commiting a 'lewd' stunt and 3 of the youth team have been suspended as well. Anyone heard what he did?

Not really good enough for this level, but he's the sort of player we're going to have to look at. Could possibly do a job on a short-term deal?

I'd quite like to see him given at least a trial, or short-term contract, he's always scored goals at a lower level (Swansea, Cheltenham) and would be a useful target man.

I saw that he'd been released by Oxford on teletext last night and thought he might be worth a try.

Edit: Sorry RT, didn't mean to repeat what you just said, I'm just a slow typer. He is the kind of player that we might be able to afford in terms of wages etc. and would probably not mind being in and out of the starting line-up.

Worth a trial or even a short term contract to give us a bit of cover up front whilst Mcphee is out and allow Virgo to drop back to central defence and cover for Cullip + Butters. It won't use up one of our loan allocations so could be a shrewd move.

It would be shrewder to sign a giraffe (as long as we could a get a shirt to fit!). Alsopp is just not good enough. Just cos he's big doesn't answer our need for a goalscorer at this level.

Maybe we should get some stilts for Charlie and push him up front, that wouldn't use up one of our loan options and it wouldn't hit the wage structure either.

give him a go no fee and stepping up divisons he wont expect a massive wage

nothing to lose on a trial

Having seen him balloon that header over the bar at Crewe I don't even think wearing stilts would make him a half-decent target man!

I know that Alsop isn't exactly a world-beater, but beggars really can't be choosers and if he could come in and strengthen our front line without costing us much, I would be happy.

that was alsop even more of a donkey than mccammon but and remember watching him play for cheltenham on new years day at plymouth a couple of seasons ago and he missed that many chances the devonport end at home park gave him the old coulsn't score in a brothle chant but he's a target man who has scored goals at a lower level so might be worth offering a trail or short term deal but definatly not the answer

Darren Currie struggled in last season's Wycombe side didn't he? Now look at him under McGhee :)

Got to agree he ain't a long term answer but we desperatly need a target man and he could help bridge the gap until Mcghee finds someone better or Mcphee is fit again.

Yep that was him, dreadful tackle on Ian Culverhouse and rightly sent off. Always remember Mark Walton got booked in that game for stopping a riot amongst the players, strange.

60 goals in 270 odd appearances doesnt suggest Alsop is the answer for us and although he is a handy target man I doubt he has what it takes in the Championship.

I've just looked up his stats and he scored something like 45 goals in 118 odd games for Cheltenham which is a pretty good ratio.
