Is that the one in Coombe Terrace.? When I was a kid, for years we knew him as Duncan, as in "you want pickle Duncan?"

You mean Sa Sa.

Good memories of visiting that chip shop, the owner was definitely a character.

Do you remember what time the shop closed Doc? :)

Bardsleys is ok but they still leave the skin on the fish last time I was there.
I would say Fillets in Lewes Road is excellent old fashioned fish and chips, nearly as good as the fish n Chip shop that was in Upper Lewes Road run by Chinese in the 80's.
Most the places on that website are over priced and not Fish and Chip shops.

The chips from that Upper Lewes Road shop were lovely, sometimes used to go in there on the way home from the pub in the early 80s.

Yeah I liked him and still see him around the betting shops in town although I prefered George n Anne's, I think Duncan used to stay open till 1130/midnight (as did the one near the Martha Gunn)

I had a good feed this lunchtime from the one in Telscombe Cliffs

Definitely 11.30, Foz used to ask Duncan what time he closed evey time he went in there.
The answer was always " ha pa leven "

Did go to George n Anne's too as it was nearer home.

I think Bardsleys is overrated and Melrose is better than Regency. It's not a F+C shop but the F+C in the Park View on Preston Drove ain't bad.

Actually, saying I prefered George n Anne was an understatement, I found Duncan's really greasy and frankly 'orrible.

Best fish n chips I've ever had was from the one opposite the The Windmill in Southwick, we beat Shrewsbury on bonfire night Saturday (1988?) and I was going out with a nurse at Southlands (who I'm still married to) and I walked from the Goldstone to there via the chippy, funny what you remember!

Non league chips are generally good PTFC are possibly the best but last night away at South Park £1.50for a large portion covered in well hot chilli sauce!

Any truth in the rumour that the cook at PTFC is going to work for Lewes FC

Chips at PTFC are nice, Whitehawk FC also do really nice chips.
Had to visit Horace's chip shop in Newhaven this evening after reading this thread.

I used to work part time at Bardsleys when I was still at school. I was 15 in 1976. It was regarded as the number one even then.

The owner was a Greek guy; family friend and Albion mad. I remember we had a £5 bet on Albion at home to Mansfield. He insisted we would lose and I wasn't having that. We won 3-1 but the tight git wouldn't pay up. So I nicked it out of the till and he never noticed. Suffice to say, a fiver every now and then went missing as he told me most of the transactions weren't rung through. And he only paid me £2.50 a week.

Lots of chippys in Brighton seem to be run by bubbles.

Don't, we've already been on to Hayley behind the bar as we don't want to lose her too.

When we had midweek games at Withers I would call into Sing Li, order my stuff then go for a pint or to and collect on way to station.

I remember the one in Lewes Rd referred to above. Used to call in when I worked at Dentsply. There was another chippie on the same site a few years back, but that was awful so I think it's now, rightly, closed.

We have not ventured into Worthing chippies of which in the 60s and 70s Clifton Rd was good as was the one in Becket Rd bottom of Jacobs Ladder not sure what they are like now.

Has the one near Wivlesfield Station changed hands or just name?
