Labour win majority on Brighton and Hove City Council

Labour have won both seats in Westbourne and Poets' Corner, pushing them over the line for an overall majority on the city council

If the Greens do badly here it'll probably be because of ward boundary changes, a reaction to them leading the Council through Covid, a recession and dealing with cuts and the national swing to Labour. What concerns me as a democrat is that Labour will probably try to introduce a cabinet style of council which will disenfranchise anyone who didn't vote for them.
When last Labour held power in the city, isn’t what they did? I seem to recall a get lost attitude to the Greens.

This time around I think it would spell the end of the ULEZ idea. Labour won’t want to upset drivers.

@Weststander Yes, they went for a referendum for an elected mayor and cabinet style. They lost.

Seems bizarre that a Labour Council wouldn't want a ULEZ as one has successfully been introduced in London by the most powerful Labour politician in England.

@Westdene Seagull Yes, the Greens made some tactical errors with the public toilet closure proposals and maybe some others. Let's see what Labour cuts. It may not be the verges.

I think the last year the council had a majority party was 2002

Hopefully some common sense policies will be put forward by them. Undoing some of the damage caused by the Greens can be reversed

Conservatives have more cllrs than the greens now
May change as Preston Park and St Peter's aren't in. Regency may go Labour. Can't see any more Tory seats.

Greens never had a majority. They needed Labour to put things through on the majority of issues. The line that they are only responsible is a myth.

The advantage for them is that Labour can't hide behind their back anymore.

I think you know more about BHCC politics than me and more people.

My insight is through a key Labour worker in Kemp Town, I also knew rivals within the LibDems scheming against each other :lolol: . What I gleaned, you’ll know all about this, is how literally political it is in a city. Machiavellian manoeuvring both within and between parties, egos, a lust for power. Perhaps worse than at Westminster?

For example if the Greens and Tories have done badly, ‘team-mates’ will put the knife in, in a blame game.

Onto environmental issues in the city, I wonder what Labour will actually do re:
- recycling rates.
- public transport alternatives to cars.
- wildflowers on verges etc. In this election, all 3 parties made great play about “weeds”. After a no-mow policy on our verges for a few years, they brutally reduced ours to soil level twice this spring already.

It seems that anti-muslim and disabled jokes are still enough to get you elected in Westdene though.

As if I didn't already despair of the electorate of this country, just when you think they couldn't get more stupid, bigoted and insular, they pull one out of the hat yet again :shootself

There won’t be but the question is will the greens grab anymore, word is Labour won both seats for Brunswick & Adelaide but not by much hence the recount, Allbrook will demand a recount each time until she gets the result she wants!
