[News] Brighton & Hove Children walk out in Solidarity for Peace, or half a day skiving.

As a councillor in this city, reading some of these comments saddens me as to what this place has become. I am ashamed & embarrassed as to what these kids did yesterday. A day off from school to support a war in another country? Was there a day off for the others. Perhaps teachers should take a day off for the hostages and the families of those murdered. If you wish to do something positive pop over to Gaza kids & ask those nice terrorists from Gaza to stop firing missiles from schools or behind their citizens and see where it gets you.
Hopefully there will be fines for those that skipped school

How ashamed and embarrassed are you?

Say on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being not ashamed and embarrassed at all, 10 being caught posting deeply offensive and racist jokes on social media and suspended by the Conservative Party.

Meanwhile my daughter's Jewish friend is no longer allowed home alone at 13 because of fears for their safety and Synagogues are hiring extra security for Bar Mitzvahs.

How about a school strike for a lasting peace on both sides instead of picking a team?
These days, if you don't pick a 'side' in a major national or global issue, you get arrested and thrown in jail.

really your a councillor, you’ve never mentioned that before, now that saddens me.
I am ashamed & embarrassed as to what these kids did yesterday. A day off from school to support a war in another country?
typical politician, twisting a story..
They were NOT taking a day off school to SUPPORT a war…
Thats a shameful comment, from someone in a position of responsibility and you’re exactly the kind of politician I warn my daughter about, someone who twists the truth for their own purpose.
You should be ashamed and embarrassed of yourself…
Was there a day off for the others.
Not a day off, and yes there has been similar protests in the past, as you well know.
but don’t let that get in the way of the truth.
Perhaps teachers should take a day off for the hostages and the families of those murdered. If you wish to do something positive pop over to Gaza kids & ask those nice terrorists from Gaza to stop firing missiles from schools or behind their citizens and see where it gets you.
A ridiculous comment from someone in a position of authority.
Hopefully there will be fines for those that skipped school
If a fine is incoming, I will gladly pay it, a price well worth paying if it opens my child’s eyes and makes her question what’s going on in the world and wants peace for “everyone”
She was not there picking a side, she was there with several class friends, catholic, atheist, Jewish, faith does not matter to her or me.

Really?? Embarrassed?? I find your position very strange indeed. These children were marching for peace. They have a right to peaceful protest. Yes they took time off school, but in the great history of life they will always recall that they took time out of their lives to express their opinion that the war should be stopped. Personally thats commendable. You should be proud of the children in your city.

In relation to the "river to the sea" part, I'm sure on face value it seems innoccuous and these children probably used it in that sense. There is a vast array of people including those on the article posted above, who believe it doesn't mean the wiping out of the Isreali people, a view expressed well on the article above by a Palestinian. Its a case of twisting the narrative, that nasty concept of twisting peoples words and taking things out of context. Its why lots of people are loath to make a comment for fear it will be twisted to reflect badly, then they get slammed for not commenting.

At least these kids did something!

I'm not advocating merely bunking of school (which this isn't) but the whole attendance thing comes from teachers wanting to hit targets, not kids missing out on 'learning'. We've had first-hand experience of long-term absence not having a detrimental effect on exam results.

Yesterday seems like a reasonable event to leave school for IMO. Knowledge is power and all that...

You want to turn this into the anti-Israel/Hamas thread?

How very droll.🙂

(And exactly why children should be marching for Peace rather than being drawn too deeply in favour of one over the other - adults can’t even seem to be able to discuss this without the risk of being divisive or getting passive aggressive with each other.)
Jesus wept.

I’ve just seen that you even edited my comment to remove the line that said: “I know these kids want peace. Perhaps that is what they should be marching for.”

That is very poor. Why would you do that?

If we’ve lost our ability to discuss divisive topics with nuance and respect for both sides of an argument, then we’re already f***ed and a US style future awaits.

We shouldn’t be afraid of explaining complicated situations as best we can giving the reasons behind each sides point of view. In situations like this, simplification is the enemy, this can’t be boiled down to one side good, one side bad.

If I were Jewish and in the U.K. right now, I would genuinely fear for my safety.

While I’m certain that the march the OP has shared with us is meant with best of intentions to promote peace, it is way too one sided in how it’s presented for me to want my kids to be there, and I would be doing my utmost to explain why to them. I’d honestly rather they bunked off and practiced learning how to smoke.

A typical politician - twisting a story to suit your own agenda.

No doubt you'll run off to all those media contacts of yours to tell them how the nasty people on the Internet have disagreed with you again. How dare anyone have a different opinion to someone who has the ear of the government, eh?

No doubt you'll conveniently ignore this, to avoid further linking yourself with that time your bigotry towards Muslims and the disabled got found out and you had to stand down as a candidate for council.

Frankly, NSC is better off when you aren't on it.

Yes, indeed.

There was much the same debate around the kids that took time out of school for the Climate Change marches although these were less politically charged and so didn’t attract the same controversy from the media

There was far less controversy or risk entailed in participating the CC protests but children shouldn’t be denied the democratic right to protest under the auspices of ‘safety’ as this article points out - they are citizens and deserve the respect afforded to grown ups who act upon their conscience in response to the world around them

I still maintain there are concerns about the risk of Children becoming embroiled in or even manipulated by extremist ideologies - or just becoming divisive over the issue - how are Jewish children to feel being escorted home or locked in synagogues while their schoolmates are on the street protesting for what some Jewish children will see as the destruction of Israel ? - because that is what the MSM is telling them to feel and perhaps their parents too. And how are those kids supposed to feel if their mates at school start accusing them of supporting terrorism? - because that is how many adults see these marches and the kids of those adults will reflect to a large extent, their parent’s beliefs and opinions?

The least we can do, if they do insist of protesting on one side of this issue, IMO is inform them of all sides including the bias in the media and government against those who are calling for the end of the War and for Palestinians to be free of occupation…which the OP seems to have done.

Conservatives always hate it when kids become politically engaged outside of the young Conservatives. Why is that? Should they be seen and not heard?

As regards things to be embarrassed and ashamed of, your posting history is the place to start. Not to mention feeble attempts to stir up anti-NSC sentiment in the Argus comments section, or was that not you?

That you have the nerve to return here talking of “what this place has become” shows a brass neck and is testament to the mods tolerance and determination to keep this as an open forum for discussion. For me, you’ve lost any respect you ever had here, and in terms of seeing the reality of any situation, my personal opinion is that you’d need one more eye to qualify as a cyclops.

Perhaps you could show your solidarity by posting racist jokes on Facebook and getting banned from your local Conservative Party as a result Ivan?

Oh…you’ve already done that Ivan

Ivan resigns

Can Councillor Ivan Lyons with a history of posting racist / Islamophobic jokes and mocking disabled people explain why he was appointed to:

Equalities, Community Safety & Human Rights Committee

and

Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education

Was he really the most suitable candidate that the Tories could offer? Shocking if that's the case.

What a sad sanctimonious little rant to read. Especially as my post was asking the kids to consider all angles.

There's an 'Anti Israel/Hamas' thread is there? Please find it. Or are you referring to a thread entitled 'Hamas attacks Israel - 'We are at war' which has an entirely different title.

Oh, and please tell me what my views are on the subject, as you seem to know. Perhaps you feel that you've bullied everyone on the thread into submission or silence and therefore feel everyone shares your view (whatever that is.)

By the way, it's nice to be noticed. 😘
I think that's extraordinarily harsh :(

I've not seen anything from @Zeberdi that justifies such a take.

Crikey. I thought you'd flounced after having branded NSC anti-Semitic for your completely one-eyed reasons.

Shouldn't you be looking after the new staff you employed the day after Thick Lizzy became PM that you would have had to sack after her 'enabling' polices, alone with her good self, were thrown into the sea?

Anyway, go on, tell us a racist joke.

I agree with you actually, I was more supporting @Guinness Boy's concept of 'not picking sides'.

And yeah, like all protests (and I've been on loads in my time) it will achieve f*** all except give the kids a half-day off.
