JPVH needs some serious heading practice. If you are going to get him in the box at corners, he needs to learn how to direct headers. He had at least 2 really good chances last night that he just completely mis-headed and not for the first time . Really rate him as a defender but not his heading capabilities (or lack of).
Maybe he can do a bit if additional scoring practice with bardoor Billy Gilmour!!

Hindsight I know, why did we not target their four yellow carded players in the second half. Attacking those players could well have resulted in at least one red. Roles reversed Roma would have niggled away at our players, got the crowd behind them.
Perfect situation for Veltmans dark arts
Nah, the ref would have bottled it! :D

Defensive headers are meant to go up and away. He is good at those but fails to adjust his technique on attacking headers. Serious practise and coaching required.

We need to stop feeling happy as a fan base and a club to think second best is an achievement. Personally I don’t think our players left everything out on that pitch last night. No urgency safe options played time and time again. What a relief it was when Igor took some responsibility and had a shot which caused a little bit of mayhem in their box. Tonight was the night to revert to good old fashioned English football pack the box and launch it we needed goals not a display of passing from side to side. We made it so easy for a Roma B team very disappointing.
You don't watch Brighton much, do you? When have we played alehouse balls into the box to fight for the knockdown in the last 5 years? Shouldn't you be supporting Everton?

Haven't seen this mentioned specifically but I thought Lallana was excellent last night in the way he orchestrated the game. I was close to the pitch and his talking/yelling/screeching to his team mates was constant. I thought he did a good job winding up a couple of their players, and definitely led to one of them being booked. Such a shame he's lost his legs but the old fella is quality and a future manager in the making for sure.

I commented at the game every time we went "agricultural" we caused them serious problems including their keeper pushing the ball out in dangerous areas. We failed far too often to do it when in a position to.
Taking shots caused the keeper to push the ball out in dangerous areas, not going "agricultural". We should have moved the ball quicker in their half and whipped a few more quality crosses in, not lumped it "agriculturally" into the air and scrapped for the second ball.

We gave it a good go but Liverpool had 1 more shot but scored 5 more goals than us. Unless we improve getting more on target and converted we wont advance much beyond where we are. Personally its not our style but I wouldve stuck Van Hecke up front with Welbeck (2nd half) and pumped high balls constanty their way. Both won several aerial battles.
Is there any successful European team that has ever played that way?

I feel like I am constantly saying something similar to friends at the game. We should target players on yellow cards but we haven't don't that in forever. I think Dan Harding in that game v Southampton was the last time it feels like we did that.

Whilst Roma were hell to watch at times we have seen firsthand how to game manage and keep tricky away ties tight in this competition. This will be a huge lesson we can learn from
The only player we have who can do this game management/shithousery bit well is Lallana. Last two games he could almost have been doing a master class.

Gilmour (in that respect) is an absolute lost cause. He needs to just realise that his shooting 'technique' is so pathetically bad, and just try to move it on to somebody else, whenever it falls to him anywhere near the goal. Every 'shot' he has is just a waste of possession.

Think there were a mixed bag of performances , 6 or 7 players played very well the rest didn't and a lot of that is down to fitness, either they are coming back from injury or carrying injuries. that said the style of play we use is hard work on the players and that cannot be good if we have so many not fit enough.

I totally agree we often play too many balls when some over the top balls would be better, that doesn't mean we turn into Everton or Wimbledon it just means we mix it up more. There were some great balls played out to Enciso wide , but he's not a winger and found it hard to progress. The other issue is we rarely get to the bye line and cross, that's what wingers should be doing and finally yes we need to shoot more often well Gross does .

Yes we didn't progress but last night we beat Roma , should have scored more as well. It might have been their B team (was it?) but certainly wasn't our best team either.

All our best play in the match went through him too. We looked much less inventive and incisive going forward in the second half without him on the pitch.
