We didn't do ourselves any favours in Rome but also, over 180 minutes, it feels like pretty much everything went for them, and nothing went for us.I don't disagree, and topping the group stage was an achievement to be rightly proud of.
Not turning up when it mattered was a reference only to our team performance/individual errors in Rome and not at all about our incredible qualifying campaign.
Roma were better over 2 legs, and agree we left ourselves to much to do, but what Roma did last year is as irrelevant to our own not turning up in Rome, as was the R32 game i watched live, that Roma were in for finishing second in their group, where they were second best in the 1-1 home game v Feyenoord, only getting through on pens. (Where Ali J missed!). None of that mattered when we rocked up.
We play that game in Rome 10x and I doubt they win 4-0 again. That's frustrating.
And thats the margins, its bloody tough to get in via the PL, then to qualify top from the hardest group, but one game when you're not at the races and it's over all to easily
Every deflection, every loose ball, every shot on goal - it all went their way and not ours.

You're right and my son and I had the conversation as we drove home. I've supported Brighton for 50 years my son, now 22, 17, one day it'll happen one day, we hope.

The bookies thought we'd beat them over 2 legs, I genuinely did too.
And without obvious bias, on a different day, I'm still sure we could of.

Whilst yes that’s football you have to make your own luck we are far too nice. We don’t have a Glenn Murray type roughing up the CB’s. Roma took the piss out of us tonight easy game for them. We seem to want to score the perfect goal 99% of the time just hit the f***ing ball at the goal and cause some panic their keeper didn’t seem to confident either.
The only one was Dunk towards the end he certainly left one on one of them

This is RDZ’s flaw we should have shut up shop in Rome and played the time wasting game like they did tonight. On average the ball is in play 56 minutes if we had done that in Rome it would have given us a real chance.

We gave it a good go but Liverpool had 1 more shot but scored 5 more goals than us. Unless we improve getting more on target and converted we wont advance much beyond where we are. Personally its not our style but I wouldve stuck Van Hecke up front with Welbeck (2nd half) and pumped high balls constanty their way. Both won several aerial battles.

Just got back to London- what a night! Sadly predictable result - gutted for the lads, a few tears from the youngsters going into the tunnel I noticed - particularly Facu, Fergie - Gross went down early and looked upset too..
Enjoyable game but we were missing more and more of an edge the longer the game progressed with only one goal in the bag. Welbeck, WBG, Lamptey and Dunk stood out for me but everyone down to the man played well enough. Not sure what happened to Facu but the attacks kept working up the wide channels leaving him a bit redundant in the CAM area when he came on, it didnt help that Adingra was frequently making some dubious decisions about when to put in the cross - both Facu and Ferguson had trouble getting any kind of service of the ball - got slightly better for Facu when RDZ pushed him out wide. Thought Danny played a blinder tonight - a full 90 minutes too- when did that last happen?
I did wonder if Pervis had over extended coming out of a challenge - he seemed to pull up a bit sharply so hope we have no injuries - few weeks to recover.
Hats off to Roma for not parking the bus, they played an open game I thought- and we played an attacking one ( most of the time) yet kept a clean sheet. I particularly noticed that RDZ kept a few defenders behind the ball tonight when we pressing, I think that made all the difference in defending against counterattacks.
Hilarious at one point having watched Roma diving all over the place and playing the ref when Baldanzi I think it was, was lying on the ground a few yards from the touchline near the West Lower clutching his shin/leg - and some disabled fan sitting a few rows back from the front then stood up and held their crutch in the air over the heads of the fans in front of them offering it to Baldanzi
Fans were amazing until final whistle then cleared off quite quickly so very subdued ending to night - NS barely stopped all night - well done. Very good atmosphere all round.
And WHU heh!? - Yaaay Europe next season is beginning to look very possible.

That was quite entertaining to watch - 4 stewards couldn't get him out of the seat during the first half and eventually they retreated leaving him sat there. He was sat on the end of the aisle so could have easily received digs from passing albion fans...
I assumed that he went inside the concourse at half time and that they made a bee line for him because he wasn't there for the second half!

Well, that’s that for this year. Taking our European campaign overall we did pretty well. No disgrace to lose to one of the top Sid’s in Europe. After all, we played major clubs and got this far. If the draw had been kinder to us, who knows?

Whilst Roma were hell to watch at times we have seen firsthand how to game manage and keep tricky away ties tight in this competition. This will be a huge lesson we can learn from

I was there with two sixteen year old footballers. Told both of them they could learn from Roma. They have the dark arts on tap.
