Brighton Festival - Is it me?

Every year I look forward to the Festival Programme with eager anticipation, expecting to see something musical I would be thrilled to queue up and see. Every year I am bitterly disappointed to see I have barely heard of any of the performers and have no interest in anything, musical or otherwise. Am I some kind of philistine or is it all just pretentious bollocks?

I think this year's Festival is pretty disappointing.

Rokia Traore is worth seeing (I've seen her twice) and John Eliot Gardiner's B Minor Mass will be awesome but there's nothing else that has me salivating.

Lali Puna might be interesting though.

The outdoor pyrotechnic-stylee events are usually unmissable, and last year's firework display finale at The Marina went on for t-w-e-n-t-y f-i-v-e minutes! Blinder, but wrap up warm

I often find that the festival could almost pass by unnoticed.

Last thing i really enjoyed was the wierd and atmospheric production of 'The bell' performed in the Wild Park a couple of years back. That was awesome.

About four years ago, there was a version of the Orpheus and Eurydice story in Stamner Park and Stamner itself that was very good indeed.

I just read the programme, and it seems a couple of the usual large scale outdoor events are free, but ticket only and are now fully booked

However, there are week-long circus workshops, with a finale on The Level at 9pm. on Saturday 23rd. May

Yeah I agree with that, this year does seem particularly weak. I wonder if it has anything to do with lack of funds? The Fringe usually throws up something worth seeing but on the whole I rarely find things I am interested in. I suppose it depends on what you are into but there doesn't seem to be anyone high profile on there, or that may be me being culturally retarded!

I actually think the Fringe line up is pretty good, The freerange tent especially.

There is plenty to keep most people occupied. The main Festival is all abit artsy for me but there are one or two interesting things in there

Hoping they do a stint in Edinburgh this year!

Interestingly enough, if you want to see some amature (and i'm warning you, it is *very very* amature*) young performers, there is a festival in april!


*At least my group is, 2 hours a week is all we have usually and now its being cut down to 1 and a half, closer to 1 because of funding issues.

I'll post details closer to teh date, but if you have got children/offspring above teh age of 14, then it may be worth taking them to our show, about abusive relationships and a comedic(ish) take on a perception of mental illness, all put together by volunteers, by "hard to reach" actors from all over the city. The group is based in East Brighton which could be considered one of the most economically deprived areas in Brighton (Whitehawk ecpecially).
