Not sure if that was sarcastic or not......

We've certainly overturned the toff monopoly up here anyway.

I wonder how many students who are at Cambridge currently come from comprhensive schools?

Working in the medical profession as I do, surgeons, on the whole, really cannot speak/engage with anyone other than their fellow colleagues.

Private schooling gives individuals a huge advantage over their state couterparts. The best public speakers/jobs tend to have been schooled privately. At the same time, although I am generalising, it does them a disservice socially and can help nurture them into loathsome beings!

Accademic results? Unsurpassed. Emotionally? These institutions are as cold as ice!

Is private schooling just a way of paying for your child to bypass society?

Mr Macintosh was the history teacher - was kicked out of Eaton for kiddy fiddling (they called it "the usual thing"). He was my form teacher for one year. He liked to have pretty kids sit on his lap whilst he rolled up their sleeves!! I recall Tony Lewis and I(not in the least bit pretty) sat in the front row just ripping the piss, but oddly, he was a very likeable man.

Miss Chesterton was a dragon - she was known to beat people with a size 13 show she referred to as "Mr Dunlop" - it was a heavy soled greenflash. She also had Mr Bongo I think - I drumstick with one of those round heads that she would clatter people with.

Mr Thornborough was Head of St Patricks. After the war he represented Britain in the Winter Olympics at bobsled. Was a very nice but very formal guy.

Left the Junior school in 1979, so I'm a bit older than some of you chaps.

Macintosh... that's the one.... his lessons were always in teresting though.

Think you're wrong about Thornborough. We used to go ovcer the the mian school for science lessons and Im sure he was the one doing Physics and if so I had him up to 81 I'm sure.

So many memories, Andy. I've completely forgotten about Thornborough but remember Mr Leornard. A nice old bloke. McIntosh was a perve. Got to sit on his lap and he made me captain of St Andrews I believe. His lessons were good fun though. I was back at BC for the OBA dinner in November which was weird but good fun. Messrs Robinson, Whitehouse and Smith still going strong. Saw Joey Appleton, Ben Stott, David Manning and Adam Belson. The school is so much more welcoming than our day. A genuinely impressive building and as someone said, just like Hogwarts. The fees are eyeiwateringly high, and, as a father of someone with Aspergers who is very bright but will never conform, not the sort of school I could send my boy to even if I wanted to. I'm proud to have been educated there, though..

Can't remember who taught me Geography.

That would be Mr Roberts, who awarded me Minor Games colours in Football during my Upper Sixth year.

He also got it when I disappeared during the Monday woodwork lesson when the Semi-Final Cup Draw was made. I'd hotfooted it down to the nearest payphone up Sutherland Road and telephoned home to find out the Albion's opponents. The smile on my face told him that it wasn't either Manchester United or Arsenal...

Thinking back, that toast rack took ages to make.

Coincidentally, I taught with David Orton at Culford School back in the 1990s. His wife Christine was running the Prep School boarding house then where I worked and Tom, his son, was in my first class I taught. The stories they told of having a worse-for-wear Mr Mac turning up on their doorstep complete with bottle and ready to party!

Staying on the sporting theme, does anybody remember the topless door length poster that Brian Davis had behind his door in his BCJS Head of Games office? It was mostly covered up with various coats and jackets, but every now and then a treat was to be had for any student lucky enough to be sent to the office.

Mr Dasgupta (Mr Das) anyone? He seemed to have a thing going on with the assistant BCJS San matron. He was in the San more than most of the permanently sick boarders.

I remember Mr Mac's history quote book which was compulsory for all students to have - Mae West's 'A little of what you fancy does you good' even made it in there along with 'Don't let the bastards drag you down'. Ofsted would probably be up in arms today, but at the age of 8-9 we didn't know any different.

All that seems a world away now.

But what makes BC a good school ? results ? You would expect the intake to get those results whatever school they go to. Yes you do benefit from paying for private education as you are paying for smaller classes that are all being taught to a higher level and has no disruption. Saying that a bright kid will do just as well in state education, I would say in general the teaching is not as good in private education.

Roberts liked rugby, and I was shit at DT so we hated each other.

Green had a heart attack shortly after chucking me out of a class for setting fire to a girl's hair. Don't think the two were related but still always felt guilty. I saw him coming out of his house this morning. Him, Rado, Lowe and Whitestone all live round Queen's Park so I see them all the time. Always see Rado when I go running and feel like apologising to him, maybe it's the seretonin high but I did give him a bloody hard time, my favourite was when we did the bucket of water on top of the door frame trick and he opened the door but it fell behind him. That was about as good as it ever got at that hell hole.

Ah now these are names I recall! Geography was taught by the rugby master Lance Barber in my day. When were you there? I was in Hampden House 1968-73. Housemaster was Fred Hankins, who had a walk like Charlie Chaplin I recall.
