Ofsted is your friend here

download the report from the website

They're franchising Brighton College and opening one in Abu Dhabi believe it or not

Also Dulwich College are doing the same and opening in Cairo, Abu Dhabi, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai.

Big business

Big business indeed. Until they want cashback from the government. Then it's a charity.

Is it a grammar ? my friends kids go to grammar schools in kent and the results are superb, just as good as private , but obviously free.

Yep - three boys grammars in T Wells area - all very good but Skinners and Judd are a bit ahead. Of course they have the benefit of selecting (via the 11+) so there are issues with the system - but god the results are good. And as you say, free.

Judd, the school my son goes to in Kent, got 100% A-C grades in GCSEs in 2008 and 2009. No pupils removed from the exam list. No fees.

I accept that Brighton College gets brilliant results, but I would disagree with the sentiment from Steve Foster that you get what you pay for. As I said, too simplistic.

As is your comment about your son's school being "a state school"!

Judd is much more selective than Brighton College. One of the top grammar schools in Kent, very, very difficult to get in if you dont live on the doorstep and very much a "hot house".

No pupil is removed from the exam list as they are almost all the elite in the first place!! Ofsted report summary:

"The Judd School is a selective school with specialist status in music and
mathematics. Girls are admitted in Year 12 and make up about 16 per cent of the
sixth form. Almost all students go on to higher education. Many come from relatively
affluent backgrounds, though this is not universal; very few take up free school
meals. The number of students with learning difficulties and disabilities is well below
average as is the number of students with a statement of special educational need."

Hardly your average state school!!

You, sir, are getting a private education for your son, through the state system (nothing wrong with that, and I will be looking to do similarly if my kids are succesful at the 11+ and if we feel a "hot house education" will suit) but be honest man!

Those in Sussex have to pay outrageous amounts of money to get a similar privilege!!

As a student of Hurstpierpoint College I have no particular dislike of the school, and neither do any of my peers, however some of the teachers really despise the school, latest round of sports fixtures got quite tasty.

LA...wishing it was devon..
They are VERY selective. I know of parents of 8 year olds that have been told that their child "isn't going to fit in at Brighton College" and been forced to take them to another school. They're good because they only take the brightest pupils.

yep..hatterlovesbrighton's other half and i have many examples of children who are lovely and bright who do not 'fit' the type required to continue past Key Stage One at BC.

these days lancing get raped by BC.

If its cricket you want, BC, Eastbourne or St Bedes is where its at.

Best school in Sussex I can assure you.....Best of sport, academia and social scene. Might be slightly biased though.....

Thanks for everyones responses.

I appreciate many of you will not know, but any ideas on what drugs may be like here? I imagine better than the others around, but it's still a worry....

Same as any school, theres going to be some around, especially at parties, but its easy enough to stay clear of and certainly no-one's going to give a shit if you turn it down. I went to a local private school for 5 years, never touched any drugs and it didnt affect any aspect of my life.

Correct on all counts. I wasn't saying that Judd is typical I was just making the point that you don't have to pay top dollar for a top dollar education.

As a bit of background, my son got into Judd through a series of happy accidents (his school closed down and we were hunting about). Some - perhaps many - parents move to be in the Kent catchments. We didn't but if we'd known about this sytems I'll bet we would have considered it.

But you do have to pay top dollar in Sussex or most other counties.

And as you have said, the grammar school system is far from perfect. In our part of the world many, if they fail to get into grammar schools, can afford to go private, leaving the "proper" state schools in Kent in a pretty poor state by and large.

Still, as I said, I'd much rather have the crack at the £200k exam (as its known if you have 2 kids), than only have the choice of paying for a top dollar education.

I went to the Junior School in the 80s. Shared a few things with the senior schoo - great canteen, I seem to remember, not that that helps. No football. And Saturday school. Do they still do that?!

.

Was a scholarship boy in 79 till 81 when I got 'asked to leave' at the Junior School. Worst days of my life and dont regret what I did to get out of there. The snobbery was unbelievable and they had no time for poor kids. The headmaster was the worst... cant remember his name, closely followed by Mr Silk who got what he deserved. Stainton-James was probably the best teacher.

However, did almost get my a place on the olympic hockey team till my knee went so not ALL bad.

I went there (on a 100% English and maths assisted place...think Too Poor For Posh School, but the exam and selection process was a lot easier) and had a f***ing shit time. There were about three other people in the entire school who liked The Pharcyde, football and skateboarding. Although I'll always be grateful to them for not expelling me before I finished my A-Levels, I had the worst effort grades in the school by an absolute mile (not summat I'm proud of, neither...)

Dont know if we have played them at Hockey, but from what I can remember of the results the rugby was fairly balanced. They absolutely hammered our football team though (unsurprisingly, bar 2 ex academy members its fairly devoid of talent).

Cranleigh are the school we cant beat (6-0) :lolol:
