No BAG, you're not allowed to say Mayo has done anything brilliantly. ;)

We were talking about mayo on the wa home today - and he is utterly frustrating, because he can be absolutely brilliant at times, yet not so at others - like today in the space of 10 minutes he controlled the ball which had been kicked miles up in the air with one touch, and then 2 minutes later he gives an absolutely shocking "pass" down the sideline!!

It's when he thinks about it that he has trouble - his instinctive passes are brilliant!

I think this and feeling the pressure for being the last line of defence have a detremental affect on his passing. He gets less time in the centre mid position but doesn't seem to panic as much and his passing is much more composed there.

I thought it was actually the other way round today!!

The most curious thing..
Was Kuipers to blame for any of the goals? Hope not
No - 1st= soft handball for penalty - FDM no chance with kick
2nd = midfield and defence stood off for entire route from halfway line to penalty area, nobody closed him down or attempted a challenge, nobody took responsibility to challenge, result good shot & soft goal. FDM no chance

Other than that Crewe created little real threat, but BHA defence shaky at crucial moments, midfield relatively solid albeit not very creative, attack hit post & bar - looked promising but little real threat - overall too much passing to where a player might have been but wasn't thus giving away possession. should have at least got away with draw. We had more chances but failed to convert. Cox good (so long as he kept running but needed more support), Forster/Revell potential.

Officials average. Ignore anti-ref/linesman whinging as mostly sour grapes. BHA penalty appeal was possible but no idea from where I was sitting despite protests from players.

To lay it out and to show I'm not just slagging Mayo off here is my opinion.

I think Mayo can do a job as a back up in midfield, mainly the centre. His pace doesn't cause as much trouble as there is a line of defence behind him and also due to this he seems to relax more and his passing improves. He can tackle as well.

I like Mouldys point about the lack of pace on the left side. However Guy can get away with it because at CB it is easier to close mark a striker than a winger. Also even when Lynch is on the left of centre he can't keep coming across to cover Mayo, firstly because he may not be able to and secondly because it may affect his game.

Mayo is slow, has poor positional sense at LB and panics with the ball at his feet in defence. He can put in a decent tackle which saves him at times but a tricky winger with pace is a big problem for him and he often gets caught out when they go inside of him. This is less of a problem when Lynch is playing because it is easier for him to stifle. Still why should he have to, any coach would tell you that a player shouldn't jeapodise his own position because another player has made a mistake.

I thought Mayo had an excellent game today let down by a couple of mistakes when he took his eye off the ball. He does lack pace but experience and doggedness usually overcomes that. He can cross well (his corners are every bit as good as Cox's), he controls the ball better at this stage of his career than he has ever done. Where he comes unstuck is when he is not getting support from the players in front of him. Today when Cox or Hammond showed for the ball Mayo could get the ball to them. He even managed some deft inside channel passes for Revell and Forster. When Cox and Hammond go missing he is only left with the chip over the top, which more often than not will go astray, regardless of the quality of the player attempting it.

Mayo tackles well and uses throw-ins intelligently. I would have him in the team every week.

It ewas Mayo's cross (albeit coupled with a brilliant knock-on from Tommy Fraser) that led to our goal today.

In fact I though the quality of our crossing in the first half was exceptional, with Mayo, Whing and Fraser (with both feet) delivering pinpoint crosses that our ront men were winning every time.

[ Adding to the fact that today, and last season, we have done f*** all with our set pieces,

apparently we finished third top in the 'goals from set pieces' league last year

Ok then, the ten managers:

Brady - central midfield
Gritt - Mayo played central midfield with a degree of success
Horton - Mayo played central midfield
Wood - Too short to count
Adams - Competition was Jamie Campbell, we need left back, Mayo fits in there. Summed up by the fact that his squad number was 19. Tried to replace him with Jones, who turned out to be a left winger.
Taylor - See above
Hinshelwood - Not long enough in the job
Coppell - No argument, he was fantastic that year
McGhee - Harding, end of.
Wilkins - How many games did Rents play last year?

Christ, has he really played under that many managers? ???

For me, that is the only thing I have found myself moaning about with Kerry.. No-one can knock his commitment, but over the years he has continued to play the above ball to such poor effect. I would guess he is instructed to play the ball, by all the coaches and managers we've had.. he just hasn't mastered it...yet...after 11 years :D!
