its a friendly.

What is the point of all this sniping and carping.

Hull got hammered by Crewe, Dorchester drew with Bournemouth, Plymouth were dicked 3-0 by some local side at the weekend.

Whats the big point?

Every season I played a decent standard of cricket we played against typically lower league sides with people getting a work out, people getting into the discipline of playing.

Sussex 2's ahve had some right shockers in my memory - being smased round The Saffrons by the MCC Cricketers for instance in a game that Colin Wells, TOny Piggot, Jamie Hll, Neil Lenham were playing in - all first XI players.

For Christs sake there are some drama queens out there. Friendly. Irrelevant.

at last some sense talked, i thought in 2nd half when AeA moved to midfield we looked a decent outfit, sure our defence creaked a little at times but are we supposed to believe that other teams defences in our div will not have dodgy moments either or are they all prem quality and we have shit loads to worry about, drama queens don't even come close, why not try focusing on positives for a change (i know that goes against the NSC grain)

Yes it was a friendly and the score was irrelevant but the performance was not.

Kuipers quite simply showed why he is the keeper he is - quality. Without him it could have been seriously embarrassing particularly in the first half. Even with his saves they missed some sitters and should have been home and dry by half time.

Whing quite simply showed why we have missed having a quality right back and what an important position it is. When he came on he was a breath of fresh air and worked hard in both attack and defence. If he get's injured we are going to have a problem.

Elphick is a natural leader and is a great prospect if he keeps progressing.

McLeod is going to be interesting. He clearly has quality but does he have the right attitude? I'm not sure but if he it motivated for 90 minutes he will be a great plus for the team. If he only wants to turn it on when he wants then he is going to be a luxury.

Ipswich weren't great but made us look silly at the back at times and carved out chances too easily. We did counter attack reasonably well at times and our ball retention was better than Saturday but still not great.

Both penalties 'were' but more worringly they were give aways.

I was disappointed MA didn't make a few changes for the last 15 minutes but saw that Virg's had a niggle which is also a worry as he seems to get a lot. I really would have liked to see Doug get a run out for at least 20 minutes as he may just offer something others can't.

Having seen 3 pre season games, all in all I would be surprised if we are much better than a mid table team but you never know. The proof of the pudding will be seen come 5 p.m. on the 9th and I just hope it tastes better than it looks.

And how many pre season games of our opponents this year have you seen to base that judgement on, how many people last year were predicting relegation !!

None and I didn't see any last season either but I did see the same number of our pre season and always felt we would be a top half team.

This season I am not as confident but hoping I am wrong.

not having a go mate just fed up with too many people almost writing us off on a few pre - season performances the other points in your post i fully concur with

kuipers - i believe is the best shot stoper in our league
elphick- if he stays without a doubt future captain
whing- good at getting forward and distribution have to accept he will miss matches through bans but first name on teamsheet (when available )
McLoud - could give fozzy and murray run for top scorer if he can be motivated too

Can't say livermore impressed me all that much either in midfield or defence but maybe given time .

You simply cannot read ANYTHING into a pre-season performance. Good, bad or indifferent, it doesn't provide ANY kind of indicator whatsoever as to the season ahead. Its a practice game, a training ground session that happens to have paying spectators there (which is why I rarely bother with them). Players are getting back to fitness, getting used to new team-mates, expermenting with different tactics and lineups.

Anyone going to these games really expecting to see how we're "shaping up" under Adams is being totally naive. We won't have ANY kind of idea until about half a dozen games into the season at the very earliest. Honestly, the way some people define their expectations for the season on the basis of a few meaningless training sessions is quite laughable.

You can LOOK at them, sure. But you don't exactly get a DEFINITE idea of how they'll pan out from viewing them in pre-season.

Molango, anyone ?

Mayo and Hart?

Bizarre situation with those two, having been released and brought back in - thats a complete one-off.

Thats not really my point though. I'm not talking about decisions on who we retain or give trials to. I'm on about the doom & gloom merchants who seem to have decided off the back of a few indifferent pre-season displays that we are destined for mid-table or worse.

Its bollocks. You cannot tell ANYTHING from pre-season performances. Bristol City got dicked by Torquay and Exeter last summer, yet they went on to get within 90 minutes of the Premiership.

I'm not saying pre-season games are a waste of time obviously. Go along to friendlies by all means, but just accept them for what they are - a TRAINING exercise. Nothing more, nothing less.

Amusing moment of the first half was Forster issuing the same bollocking 4 times to Dean White. White had accused him of not making a run, and Forster kept shouting and pointing back "Have a go at me if i don't make the run - don't have a go at me if i do" over and over (and over) again!

And amusing moment of the second half, the shout of "Get him, Whingy" just a split second before Whing took out their no 14 in front of the dugouts.
