Our farmers probably weren't helped by those UKIP and Brexit Party MEPs who wouldn't turn up or fight Britain's cause in the EU parliament for the last 20 years. I wonder if these farmers voted for them

Plus of course Britain wasn't helped by its original exercise in fantasy exceptionalism in the early 50s when it refused to take part in writing the rules of the EU's predecessor.

When discussing farming, do remember that the figures cited are generally the 'Farm Business Income' (see links below). This is defined as income from crops/stock, subsidies, diversification, sale of assets less costs of paid labour, fuel, overheads, repairs, rent, depreciation, phones/computers, etc. I wouldn't wish to be a farmer, and don't wish to belittle their hardships and hard way of life. But the farm income as quoted in the press is the equivalent of [part of] the 'disposable income' of the average family - basically the family income, minus the cost of the car(s), petrol, clothes for work, rent/mortgage, phone, computer, repairs to the home, and so on.

Does this mean that farmers will not enjoy the promised 'sunny uplands' in January 2021?

Sunny Uplands in Wales will certainly be Sheep Free within 18 months.

West is BEST
It is very odd seeing people say that 3.5 billion is not that much when it is more than twice as much as the whole fishing industry is worth. As we all know the fishing industry has been made the most relevant industry for brexit. It is absolutely bizarre that people would rather a no deal to protect a relatively tiny and insignificant industry and destroy loads of others. All very odd.

No I am not saying fishing doesn’t matter. I am saying it is relatively very very small to others.

I don’t think you need to qualify what you’re saying with the word “relatively”. It’s a tiny industry. Full stop. It makes up less than 0.5% of our industry.
Apart from a few species, we import most of our fish and seafood.

My family were farmers for 500 years but now it's in the past sadly. If my mother had been my father then perhaps my life would have been very different. Whereabouts in Britain are your family's three farmers?

West Country just ouside Bristol. One a sheep farmer, one cattle and one deer.

Bloody Worthing!
Liz Truss - a woman whose sole purpose on the planet is to make Priti Patel look pleasant - this morning talked tough not only about the negotiations with the EU but also those with the US. Apparently we are quite prepared to walk away from both. The prospect of the UK being a global Billy no-mates is looming!

Entertaining, if the implications for the country was not so serious, watching Brexiteers here, and on other social media platforms, realising the scale of their stupidity.

I think the UK-EU negotiations were once described a 3-D chess. So how on earth can there be parallel negs with the USA? I's one thing protecting your red lines, but when the red lines of the 2 parties that you are negotiating with are probably contradictory, how can this be done? Answer: plump for the USA, ditch the EU and ditch your own red lines about chicken and the NHS? (As soon as we walk away from one negotiating party our position with the other one becomes more desperate and supine.)'

And since 2016 we already have a GDP deficit of 2.5% in lost growth. When Moggy said things would improve in 50 years, maybe he was serious after all

Q: So you accept that the anticipated GDP gain from a trade deal with the US is less than the anticipated loss from leaving the single market?

The spokesman says the government will be consulting later this year on the different views on the potential gains from a trade deal with the EU.

He says the Treasury’s 2018 analysis was “conducted by another government”. It was controversial, he says.

Q: So you no longer accept it?

The spokesman says that was an analysis conducted by a previous government. The government now wants to carry out an alternative analysis, he says.

No 10 says government no longer accepts 2018 Treasury analysis of impact of Brexit.

So basically they aren't taking any notice of the 2018 analysis and are putting of any analysis of their own until after the self imposed deadline in June to see substantive progress in talks.

****ing shysters this government.

As of now they haven't done ANY analysis.

So we've had any MP of experience that pointed out the potential problems kicked out the party.

Any Ministers of experience who pointed out the potential problems kicked out the Cabinet.

And now they are after any experienced Civil Servant who is pointing out potential problems.

With the most inexperienced sycophantic Cabinet in history, going into the most intense negotiations in history. I wonder what could happen ?

And, is it just me, or have NSC's Brexiteers all but disappeared off this thread now the talking bollox is over and things are actually starting to happen and the effects are slowly dawning on even the most elementary of them ???

Love to know what we will be able to sell to the Yanks post Brexit we can't sell now. We all know what the Yanks want from us, but what where is the opportunity for the UK?

I think we are all rapidly learning that the 'normal rules' don't apply to this lot. I think the pre-election purge of the more decent wing of the Parliamentary party signalled that there are now no intra-party checks and balances. The huge Parliamentary majority ensured that there is not effective Opposition and the attacks on the media have further inched us towards somewhere unpleasant. That the likes of Patel and Williamson were re-instated to the Cabinet after previous sackings for serious misconduct is further evidence.
This is a foul government, led by the worst PM in living memory. If you elect (actually 'anoint' might be even better) a proven liar to the highest office in the land, then what do we expect? These are truly grim times.

On the sycophantic Cabinet I still cannot get over the first meeting when he had them chanting the policies of the manifesto, like children repeating their times tables!

The defence of Patel and open accusations of sexism in Parliament from Tory MPs yesterday were a(nother) complete stain on the government. The fact that since 2010 Theresa May (6 years) and Amber Rudd (nearly 2 years) have been in Patel's position seemed to slip their minds. Disgusting behaviour.
