It's fair enough and I can understand your reasons for voting for Johnson, even if I wouldn't personally do the same, in the same situation. (And, if you have a family to support, housing, food bills etc in the South-East, I don't think £50K pa can be considered 'rich' in any sense).

I think that by voting for Johnson, there is every chance your 2 brothers in law will suffer the exact effects that you are hoping for, and I wouldn't for a minute attempt to defend them. My worry is how many 'innocent' people (including children) who don't get benefits as a life choice, but will also be caught up in the oncoming benefits squeeze and Universal Credit roll out.

Unfortunately, on your second point. I think that if you believe that Johnson is going to get Brexit 'finished' in anything under 10 years, you are going to be sadly disappointed.

We wouldn't leave on 12th April
Johnson would be elected leader of the Conservative (and Unionist !) Party
Johnson would some back with a deal that Theresa May had already turned down
We wouldn't leave on 31st October
Caroline Lucas would increase her majority

There probably will be. The Lib Dems gained 1.3 million voters since 2017, the Tories only 320,000. Any illusion the Tory message has enormous popular support is a by-product of our election system that means pro 2nd referendum parties get more votes, but they need 865,000 votes per MP (Greens) or 336,000 votes per MP (Lib Dems) whereas the Tories only need 38,000 votes per MP.

I'm sure all those people who complained about their anti-EU voices not being represented will be along soon to lend their support to true democratic representation of the majority though...

Brexit will happen because our democracy prioritises the most popular minority over the majority (who don't want a Tory government but now have no representation), but the lack of humility or willingness to accept the election showed the country is more divided than ever and doesn't find Johnson's Brexit attractive doesn't bode well for the future.

Well expressed! We have an outdated system that will always be maintained by the parties who most benefit from it.... no matter how unrepresentative of the country it is. Somehow, in the longer term we need find a fairer process.
