If there is any call for a meritocracy stemming from this result it's probably got something to do with the alarming rise of anti-intellectualism, favored by the likes of Pol Pot and a lot of the Brexit clowns like yourself!

Is the best outcome of this farce to leave but take a Norway trade deal with access to the common market and free movement but free us to trade directly with rest o the world. This allows us to deal directly with India and other markets the EU have thus far no agreed deals with

So what really was the point? Norway pay per head about the same as us so what exactly have we gained. These deals with the rest of the world will take several years to negotiate and we only have a limited number of negotiators!!!!

Do you really think the Germa... erm, I mean the EU, will give you a Norway-like trade deal, after you have just spat on their biggest post-war political/economic project? Do you really think they will allow you to flourish and let other Union countries observe this and get ideas about leaving too? To expect this to happen would seem perhaps a little bit naïve.

Just listening to James Landale now on Radio 4 now, saying we need to get our trade deal with the EU sorted first and foremost because other countries want to know exactly what future relationship we will have with the EU and what access levels to the single market we will have before negotiating let alone committing to potential new trade deals with us.

I think it would be naive to suggest that just being upset means they hold all the cards in negotiations. One of the largest economies in the world and major purchaser of their goods and services may be leaving so whilst upset it is not in their interests anymore than ours to put up significant trade barriers.

There was no point and I have never known why this bloody thing was held in the first place. Merely pondering from where we are what may deliver a partial solution to what is clearly a divided country

Too much is at stake for them here--if the UK leaves and gets a good trade deal, which allows your country to be better off outside the EU than as a member, it will mean the end of the Union, and they won't allow that to happen. Also, I wouldn't underestimate the emotions/ideology level of it all: the greatest political/economic project of post-war Europe is endangered and there are forces willing to do a lot more than political common sense would suggest to save it (as we could see in the EU letter, urging Britain to leave "as soon as possible").
