Agreed, but his party believe the votes are to be had by veering further right (they’re wrong)

My wish is that they disappear so far up their own hard right fantasy arseholes they never see the light of day again, with only confirmed blackshirts voting for them.

However, we both just know that within 15 years they’ll be back, with a slightly charismatic friendly face promising that they’re now a completely different party to the clowns who ran the country into the ground for more than a decade.

What’s worse is that our mug voters, encouraged by the national press and having grown weary of a Labour government will believe them and vote them back in. Then we’ll do the whole sorry dance again.
Indeed.

Something to make me angry when I turn 80.

Well, we’re reaping what we’ve sown with our decisions. I honestly thought Rishi would delay them again so it became whoever won the next election’s problem, and he could cynically try to blame Labour for the inevitable teething problems these will cause if they got in.

It’s going to be one hell of a mess to sort out by the time we get any adults in charge.

Unfortunately, tonnes of illegal meat imports with potential to bring African Swine Fever to the UK are being found, even with the limited checks that are currently in place. If we don't start checking properly, there is a huge risk to UK Pig farmers.
I guess some of the Farmers in Eastern EU states where ASF is a problem, are targeting the UK market as they know we are not checking properly, and are not EU members, so have limited ability to stop them or trace it.

Another triumph for Brexit then, who WOULDN’T want African Swine Fever. Well done chaps, carry on.

I could be wrong of course, but I don't think there is a single cognisant member of NSC who has an argument in favour of Brexit any more; the sheer tide of anger and/or their own disillusionment has silenced them or driven them underground. The 2016 'we won, get over it' mantra must seem rather hollow now.

However, if Labour is to turn the situation around they don't have many levers they can pull, but one of them is to boost manufacturing by entering a Customs Union or rejoining the Single Market. That's not the same thing as rejoining the EU, and you would hope Starmer has the statesmanship to communicate and sell that to the electorate.
Agree, but it appears to have been ruled out by Labour.

I guess to keep the red wall happy (that Labour is going to win back anyway)

Lib Dems can clean up in the South if they were to promote rejoining the CU / SM

It's a second term policy, term 1 show the UK they can be trusted and get the country back towards not being shit, second term they put forward a referendum to rejoin as it's the only way to complete the job.

I agree. I don’t think any political party with designs on being in power will be ruling out rejoining. It’s the will of the people. Whatever the Gammony Thickets would have us believe.

Don't think there will be a referendum, what's the point. That deal took 40+ years of hard negotiation by politicians of all parties and we'll never get back close to the position of power we were in before we threw it all away.

The Trade and Cooperation Agreement is due for it's first review and renegotiation by the UK and EU in 2026 with no set terms of reference. It means Starmer can renegotiate it to look very much like a customs union whilst selling it to the Brexiteers as a 'deal specially for Britain' and they can then all claim that this was the Brexit they voted for all along :dunce:

He really wouldn't want to risk getting them all excited about immigrants, borders, bendy bananas, buses with banners and what is now left of our fishing, farming and agriculture industries all over again. That's exactly how Cameron, Johnson and Sunak got us into this current farcical state Britain finds itself in

Labour are stuffed over Brexit, there is no way back until about 90% of the public start, and, effectively campaign for a government to take them back in to the EU... This will have to build until such time as the difficulties and costs to our economy are so glaringly obvious to everyone that there is no alternative.

Effectively, everyone has to beg. Otherwise the Tories will hold it against Labour for the next 30 to 40 years thanks to the incredibly effective right wing media bias which still tries to blame Labour for the 2008 WORLD banking crisis, selling off some gold at the wrong time and having Jeremy Corbyn as leader. All of which are acceptable Tory lines of attack despite ruling over the longest period of wage stagnation, the return of Victorian diseases and the crumbling of service levels across virtually all of our utilities and the NHS.

This is probably what Labour are thinking. However, in reality that means any meaningful change is at least 5 years away. I don't think our economy can wait that long.

We can't afford to finish HS2, many of our city councils are broke, taxes are historically at a high level, there's talk of slashing the army by 1/3rd, we about to lose our ability to manufacture virgin steel. This is really grim stuff.

There does seem to be a growing idea that if we elect Starmer it negates all the other really f***ing stupid stuff we've done over the last few years

I need cheering up, so am off to the Amex :bigwave:

Just learned tonight that The Old Tollgate at Bramber has closed, they cite the usual reasons, Food, energy and wages all gone up plus staffing problems and customers unable to pay the higher costs to eat there.

The first problem that needs to be dealt with is undoing the corruption such as Teesside Freeport. Land sold off £1 an acr, where all the profit is going to two individuals.
This is the reason Central government has been starving local councils of funding, so these Freeports, and Special Enterprise Zones can be levelled up. In reality, it is giving certain people the authority to rape and pillage, Green belt land, and National Parks, for gas, oil and minerals.

It can indeed, but nobody will take the financial loss to set up the bottling, bottling plants etc for a non-existent market that has now been 'opened up'

Seems somewhat appropriate :dunce:

There was cross party support for a plan that used public funds to clean up parcels of that land, lease it and use the money from leasing and selling scrap to clean up the next parcel. The Tory Mayor then made a decision, seemingly alone, to change that and give these two characters the land, still use public money to clear the sites, give 50% of the scrap revenue to the company, and get repaid over the term of the leases for the public funding. The two guys have put no money in, taken £60M plus from scrap sales and leased two parcels out. The Mayor claims that it takes risk away from the public purse, but of course it puts profits into private hands, and if it goes tits up, they will close the company, having already paid out dividends on the scrap sales profits, or beg for further grants and funding.
It looks like a f***ing good deal, for the company.
