There is evidence that he would try and take the UK out without a deal, he has said he would. There is evidence that no deal would lead to a hard border in Ireland. What do you think is a more likely outcome, if this one seems far fetched?

Just the very thought of Boris on one side of the Atlantic and Trump on the other is sufficient to make Remaining with (mostly) sane and rational Europeans with (most importantly) appropriate hairstyles a hugely attractive proposition. Please deliver us from the Boris-Donald axis of awfulness,

This is certainly the standard narrative (and one that Nigel would like us to share). But the rise of the Brexit Party must be seen in the context of the complete collapse of the UKIP vote. Most of their votes are simply switchers from one flawed brand to another. (I think this analysis holds up to scrutiny a little more robustly than 'it's the Europeans that got Labour in'.)

Quite frankly, if it can't win in a by-election when it's riding on a wave, it's going to get nowhere in a GE, when its resources are going to be more widely spread and where its policies will come under closer scrutiny.

Agree with that - last night's result was dreadful for the Brexit Party and is IMO is meaningless when comparing to a (post Brexit) GE. All that happened was the 'leave' vote was split between two parties thus ensuring a Labour hold.

What is shows is that unless the Tory party deliver on (some form of) Brexit they are finished.

This. What we have here is a consituency that is MASSIVELY Leave and an outgoing Labour MP who ended up in PRISON. If you can't win that as a protest vote in a by-election you can kiss the General Election goodbye.

I wouldn't be too hard on someone who makes a mistake and then apologises. The problem was that what was just an opinion was presented as a stone cold fact, an absolute truth.
