My take on what Amber Rudd has been saying over the last few days is it seems like a case of "we were only following orders", the orders being May's vision as spelled out in the Lancaster House speech. I don't believe for a second Rudd personally wants to leave the Single Market or Customs Union, ditto Hammond.

If Brexit works out Rudd can say she was part of it, and if it fails she can say she personally never supported it.

Pretty much - she has ambitions beyond being Home Secretary - she did private polling a while back on a potential leadership bid, which showed she may win the parliamentary party vote, but wouldn't stand a chance amongst the blue rinse membership if it came to it for now and even had an agreement with Sir Nicholas Soames for him to stand down in Mid-Sussex and her take the seat if needed, which it would be. It's well known here locally she's told her association that if she was PM she 'wouldn't want to touch Brexit with a barge-pole.'

Depths yes, but I'm not sure there is anything new about them. Collaborators, dissidents, traitors... they all get lobbed over.

... to combat the Little Englanders, racists, stupid, thick and xenophobes thrown in the other direction.

Hahaha! The Tories have been in a civil war over Europe since the 80s. In that time, we've had the Bruges Group, John Major's '********', defections to the Lib Dems and Labour, ERM, Euro, Brexit and so many other battles and yet they are still there in government.

The Tories fight over Europe, always have done and always will. All this scollobs of imploding has been said at every new turn of events with the EU in the last 30 years. This latest claim by you is yet more wishful thinking and more evidence that you haven't a scooby about any of this.

I don't think you have to be fair as none of the previous battles were fought after a vote was carried to exit Europe, always before the right wing headbangers were wishing for it and now the Tories are having to deal with the actuality of it all

So what is going to happen now, cliff edge?

The options aren't 'soft Brexit' or cliff edge there's a lot of murky water in between. Best guess, we will be leaving the Single Market, leave the customs union (Brexit) but have a customs 'arrangement'. The transistion/implementation period will be two years. The only chance of a cliff edge is if the EU decide to push us towards it .. which is their right obviously.

And Ireland sorted with technology solution, all sounds incredibly straight forward
