They all broke the rules, but Greece took the absolute piss. Austerity could disappear if they actually collected the tax they should. Greece's issues are of it's own making but the Euro enabled them to do it, and really they should not have been allowed to join it.

Of course they shouldn't have been allowed to join - although I think the reality is more that they weren't allowed not to join - it was part of the EU's big integration plan, all joined together under one executive, one financial system, etc. - One currency to suit them all, and in the Euro bind them! Fortunately, the UK refused to join the Euro; poor little Greece wasn't strong enough to.

How will Britain exiting the EU help?

We didn't vote Leave to help Greece! Though if Brexit is the first step in dismantling the rule of Brussels that may help them in the long term.

Whiners without substance whereas the winners seem like they hold all the argumentative cards.

To put a bit of spice back into this thread is it not possible to New Year pardon all those that have been banned from it in the past in the spirit of coming together , seems rather unfair for a user of any persuasion to be obstructed on a permanent basis from a thread that is coming up to two years of existence and plays a massive part in NSC and peoples lives. Kicked off the thread for a few weeks is one thing but permanently …..seems a bit rough.

What would make the thread less stagnant is if supporters of the leave position actually told us what they were for, rather than against. Most of their posts can be summarised like this.

• The EU institutions and programmes are corrupt, bureaucratic and undemocratic: OK we know they think this, what will replace them?
• Democracy is democracy (or it was in June 2016), Brexit is Brexit, etc : meaningless.
• Anyone raising an awkward question about the process is schemingly seditious or a loon: hardly consistent with any interpretation of democracy or a serious commitment to successful change.
• Ignore the experts, it isn’t going to be as rubbish as they say; look Sports Direct in Grantham are hiring 2 new sales assistants; not really very inspiring.

So what is the leaver’s vision for 2025 or 2030: a combination of Singapore and Walmington-on-Sea; The Handmaid’s Tale?? They got us to this position; inspire us and maybe then we can discuss the merits of this vision and the likelihood that we can get there.

I don't see how post Brexit Britain is likely to be more class driven. For years the natural progression, both legal and in terms of social mores and customs has moved steadily away from class. Think of the one time universal hierarchies that have broken down - men over women? Now sexual equality. Straights over gays? No, now both the law and social mores have moved to equal rights for homosexual people. I'm not saying either of these processes are complete, but they've moved a hell of a long way in the last 50 years - and I don't see being in or out of the EU making any difference.
The reinforcement of class through the use of titles has virtually disappeared - I can't remember the last time I was addressed as 'Mr.' by a professional or tradesperson - it's always egalitarian Christian names - sorry, first names - now. And as for Labour and Conservative - are the PLP anything like working class these days? Come to think of it, do many of the Tory MPs look like a bunch of toffs?
This breakdown of a class system is an organic process - driven by societal changes. Do you see any way that this will change after Brexit? I can't.
The wealth gap (definitely not to be confused with class), though - that is still well and truly with us. I don't think Brexit will cure it - not quickly, anyway - but neither would remaining. After all, the gap between the rich and the poor in this country has risen out of control on the EU's watch.

The gap has widened due to successive money grubbing governments. Not just Tories. The EU is dedicated to balancing wealth disparity. You watch the gap widen, esp in areas such as the North West, North East, and the West country once w e are out and the funding disappears along with EU funded health centres and social resources. It is undeinably going to get very messy for a lot of poor people. Has May come up with a plan to replace this funding and continue building social resources for the most vulnerable in society? That needs to be addressed.

Not in my experience. Any verifiable evidence that in the real world anyone has ever been sanctioned for only not logging on to a Universal job match account .. not applying for jobs you are capable of doing rather than relying on state handouts is OK then .. the wonder of Corbynism, world owes me a living/victimhood.

I am sure there are some cases of overbearing/unfair thresholds re benefits but to suggest this is why we have record employment, low levels of unemployment is nonsense.

The liars telling you we were 'all in it together' told you to vote Remain .... well done for doing as you were told.

One of the causes of sanctions being imposed is that some people simply do nbot have the wherewithall to fill out forms, use computers, use th einternet, answer letters, keep appointments or generally organise their lives. These are almost without exception the most vulnerable. Universal credit for people like this is a disaster. They wait all month for a payment and then get a lump sum that they then have to work out a budget for and pay bills etc. Some people are simply not capable of managing this. It spirals out of control.

One lady who was repeatedly raped and beaten by her partner was locked in the house for days on end, missing appointment after appointment until she was sanctioned out of the system altogether. The partner did a runner, she ended up on the street and was found raped and murdered in January of last year.

Britain is pushing to remain under EU regulation for medicines after Brexit, the latest sign ministers want to stay close to Europe in some sectors despite the bloc warning the UK cannot “cherry-pick” parts of the single market.

The move follows calls for the UK’s chemicals and aviation industries to continue to be regulated by EU agencies, keeping them within Europe’s standards and safety regime and under the auspices of the European Court of Justice.

Three senior government figures have told the Financial Times that the UK hopes to be regulated by the European Medicines Agency, even as the body moves from London’s Canary Wharf to a new post-Brexit home in Amsterdam.
