From southern counties website:-

Two dead in school crane collapse

Two people have died after a crane collapsed at a school building site.
Police said the crane fell down on the site of Durrington School in Worthing, West Sussex, and another was in danger of toppling over.

The crane was on the site of new buildings being constructed and was on the other side of the complex away from the school.

No children have been affected, the police spokesman said. About 25 firefighters are at the scene.

A fire service spokesman said it was thought the crane collapsed onto empty buildings.

I went to Durrington High School and have seen the building work going on at that site. It is actually re-buidling Highdown School which is the special needs school which is currently situated across the road. Liam Neeson's nephew attends Highdown School.

This is sad news.

Those cranes were enormous!!! I mean like the REALLY BIG ones that you see in Docklands etc. Thankfully by the sound of it it didn't keel over onto the road or towards the school....

Wonder what caused it? NEVER heard of that happening before and it's not even particularly windy down here at the mo.

Several things can cause cranes to collapse, but it's certainly very rare.

I worked on a job last year where the project manager had been involved in 3 previous crane collapses (one in docklands). Were we all mighty relieved when the cranes were safely taken down?

Likely the operator would be one of those killed. It's a bloody long way down.

Looks like it's not the whole crane but the end bit, whatever that is called, I guess it might have tried to pick something up that was too heavy or there was a fault with the metal/
