My sentiments exactly. Obama should shut the f*ck up and take some ownership that the Yanks are heavily involved in this disaster. As someone pointed out, it's the yanks that are the major gas guzzlers on this planet and their need for oil oil and more oil bounds no limits .

One good thing that will come from this disaster is an upping in the stakes of alternative energy sources now. Aside from "we're gonna get BP" it's one of the other main things that Obama has already spoken out.

Pork pie land.
Never try to catch a falling knife.

There will be plenty of folk nursing losses on stocks like Lloyds and RBoS because "surely they can't go any lower" but they did. And then some more. And then some more again. And, unfortunately, most of us run out of cash so can't keep averaging down our holding price as the stock tumbles.

I'm not saying you won't make money - you're well aware of the gamble you're taking. But with polls in the US showing that many think Obama has handled the oil spill poorly, he is only going to get tougher and tougher with BP, and their financial burden will grow and grow. How much 'oil clean up cost' is built into the current price?

I agree with the polls. Obama is handling it like a desperate man with political problems.

With his speach from the Oval Office, and harsh condemnation of BP, before he has even met with them today, he has made himself look very silly.

The way he is talking, if they were a country, he would be accusing them of having WMDs and sending-in the troops!

I just wonder how much sabre rattling we would see amd what noises he would be making, if it were a US firm and not a British one?

What a shame that the world has been saddled with this clown as US President. He could cause even more problems than George W Bush!

A move to alternative energies could be another drain on the BP share price.

The thing is it was a US company that was actually carrying out the drilling, manned by Americans & leased from BP, is this not right? I like how it is British Petroleum when the shit hits the fan but BP otherwise to the Americans. Deflection.

That's what I thought, what would happen if the chairman of BP told Obama to go f*** himself ? It's his country that needs the oil !

What kind of alternative energy sources do you see powering the USA's future?

I would avoid this one for a very long time, at least until they go below a pound, at that point they may be a decent long term bet...but as with any shares, don't spend any more on them than you are prepared to lose, just in case they go completely belly up or are taken over. Not all companies can survive a disaster, remember Townsend Thoresen, a big ferry company until the Zeebrugge disaster in the late 80's...now no more!

the question of who is responsible for the clean up cost could be argued that if bp or whoever was running the rig was running to the standards set by the us government then surely its the us government who is at fault for not having the strongest possible safeguards in place.

he can bleat and posture over the issue as much as he likes, the bill will only come to cost of clean up + cost of compensation. once the oil leak is stopped, the assessment of the end bill can be accurately calculated and it will not be as much as some seem to think. the fishing industry for example will probably recover in 3-6 months. the clean up cost to date is $1billion, one can estimate that it will continue at the same pace untill fixed then the portion of that going to compensation continuing while fishing etc isnt possible. i recall hearing $6billion estimate (but no idea where).

trying to guess the bottom isn't too clever, but on this one, once the oil stops leaking thats certainly the time to take a hard look, as many other oil companies will be. You dont go from second largest (or was it largest) oil company in the world to half value on the back of one little oil spill. massive cash flow, massive future earnings and massive cash reserves. Massivly over-sold.

If Obama gets his own way BP shares will dive to around the 50p level. Cameron should tell him to stop f***ing meddling or otherwise we'll pull out all our troops from Afghanistan and let the Yanks deploy more troops over there to be killed and maimed.

If Obama gets his way he will ruin BP by stripping them of all assets. He already has 20 billion in an escrow account, with no cap, to be administered by...the Obama administration. I wouldn't touch BP shares with a barge pole.

20bn is approximately 9 months profit for bp

Be interesting to see how Cameron deals with this issue. Why do I think he will ignore it ?

Asset stripping could be the end game that sees BP taken over by an american oil company.
