Jonnson has never run anything other than editing a right-wing magazine. .

Which he did very well, except employing that compete and utter prick Toby Young. Much better than Matthew D'Ancona. But I will agree it is not a hugely impressive CV for what is a pretty big job. He is definitely a buffoon whether he is an incompetent idiot only time will tell.

Funny really. This board was saying exactly the same thing about when Brighton kicked Labour out.

Nasty suburban provincial, working and middle classes. Probably London born and bred. How dare they vote Tory.

Actually your admission that you don't know anyone who voted Tory shows you as the cocooned out-of-touch person that you really are. Over a MILLION people voted for him. Open your eyes get out into the real world and you'll easily find one or two.

That's the interesting thing, though. I work with a lot of people who would regard themselves as Tories, yet none of them admitted voting for Boris - some even voted for Ken, simply on the basis that he has been a decent mayor of this city, irrespective of party politics.

Yes, I have an issue with someone who lives in, say, Sutton (in the county of Surrey) saying who should be Mayor of London. What do they know about what it's like to live in Hackney or Peckham?

But then we all know elections unfairly discriminate against the Left because those whose policies they would most benefit (ie the poor and dispossessed - of which there are thousands in London - are very unlikely to vote.

Then let the mayor just be mayor of the bits you want him to and let the suburbs have a different administration and a lower council tax.

Which is presumably why we have a third-term Labour government and have had a Labour mayor of London for eight years.

Sutton has been a full blown part of London since 1965. It only keeps the 'Surrey' tag for postal purposes.

You people really do make me laugh. You cant pick and chose which bits of London you think really count - otherwise let Sutton, Bromley and Bexley go their own way and have their own administration ?

For what its worth I thought Ken had done a very good job as Mayor, but there's a lot of resentment building up in middle England at the moment.

What this makes me more surprised about is the fact that Ken got a good percentage of votes in these places in 2004. Fair enough 2000, when Tories were demoralised and Ken was the best way to piss off Blair, but 2004, when Labour had awful local election results..

To be honest, I wish Ken had lost to Norris in this contest. Though I'm far from a Tory, I would be far more confident under his leadership than Boris. I don't know how Boris will play it either, he seemed stilted when trying to be serious but at the same time, joking around will only get him so far. I also wonder whether he will try and act independently of Cameron or follow the party line?

Right now I have no idea how he will play it.
