Oh I completely agree. There are people out there who genuinely don't understand how all this works though

The UK is very small fry in the trading stakes as far as America is concerned. We were useful as a gateway into the EU, but no longer.

people like to say this, ignoring we're the 4th or 5th largest market available.

If Boris was a truly green P.M he'd be looking for a free trade deal with a trading bloc that could receive our goods within hours of despatch, rather than moving goods huge distances to places like the USA or Australia.

Those goods could - in turn - be moved by electric truck which should be viable for long-haul in the next 5 years.

If only we had such a deal...

a fleet of solar powered blimps crossing the Atlantic is more likely in 5 years than electric haulage on the continent.

To point out, the US does not have free trade agreements with:

China
EU
UK
Switzerland
Norway
Taiwan
India

Yet goods and services still flow, either with sector wide agreements or WTO tariffs.

The all powerful US just don’t like signing free trade agreements, unless they hold all the aces.

It seems a significant number of people were persuaded otherwise by a couple of snake oil salesmen, but I think the above has always been obvious to anyone who has given it any consideration.

I really do worry about the number of people who seem to be susceptible to fairly simple scams these days. I wonder whether it's the education system that's at fault ???

I’ve assumed all along that a free trade deal won’t be signed.

It won’t stop Range Rover’s and scotch being imported, no change, as the EU was always a million miles from a deal with the US.

I was very pro-Biden, always pro Democrat, but Biden’s & his team’s arrogance over a range of issues has shocked me - Afghanistan the botched ending, not communicating with UK/EU governments, not allowing EU nationals in from near Covid free Scandinavia for example, whilst Covid ridden Mexico had a free pass.

Symptomatic of an arrogance in general, their way or the highway.

Agree with all of that. I've also been disappointed in Biden, but I wouldn't go as far as shocked, sadly

I'm bothered, in part fearful that this will herald the return of the Alt-Right Trump clan in 3 years time.

The Democrats need to get a grip.

I don't like reading about it, but I gather his natural successor Kamala has been making gaffes and is now seen as a weak candidate.

Neither do you as you are seemingly conflating the roles of government advisors, ministers and civil servants in your posts.

Twas always going to be like this. The US exports more to us already than we do to them, why should they make trade easier for us at their expense ? Additionally every nation worldwide knows we are desperate for face saving trade " Deals" in order to make up for the loss of trade to our nearest customers since the start of 2021, they know we will roll over and have our tummies tickled for anything, the much vaunted deal to supply British Lamb to the US probably was a free sample from Boris to Joe and Jill of 20 chops for their freezer..... and, they will probably give them to the First Dog !

We're always pandering to the US, why can't we just go ahead and make our own decisions.
If this were on Tinder, Boris should swipe left...

This is why

Why would anyone enter into a deal with any other motive than to pick our bones? We have become a toxic territory and kept that way by Boris Johnson and his charmless cabinet. We are a laughing stock and the bigger boys are shaking the lunch money out of our pockets.
Plus people don't like liars. Their guts tell them to steer clear. Our PM is a liar.

So an Obama comment as a favour for his mate Dave, is 'official' US policy for the next xx years just to make us wrong for a vote about OUR sovereignty which now they can't do anything about.

Really??

Maybe he said it because Dave asked him to, but it also happened to be true, official policy is whatever suits America best. Pissing off the Irish Americans, or damaging the chances of an EU trade deal, by doing an inconsequential deal with the UK, does not suit any American President.
