I find it utterly embarrassing that we have fans who boo our own players. I hoped that somehow the likes of Barnes might not hear these idiots but the fact he has only compounds the misery of having to sit near one such moron who seems to like nothing more than slate his own team.

I didn't hear any booing. In a pre-penalty crowd one of two people booing might be heard - but could there have been more than a couple, in a crowd of 28,000 ? Much ado about nothing.

What there was around us - was disbelief that a player with an iffy penalty record at best, demanding to take the penalty himself rather than a player who has a 100% record. That is not wanting the best for the team. And people were expressing their amazement and trepidation.

Delighted he scored it - but had he missed - I would not have been happy. Anyone can miss a penalty - but to demand to take it rather than David - it was a pretty selfish act.

This post echoes my sentiments on this particular subject (I must think of a more succinct way of putting this)

I 'oooh-ed', thinking we'd either score (great!) or the reaction of people would be something to behold (ranging from annoying or frustrating me to entertaining me.

But his "iffy penalty" record for prior to saturday was either 9 or 10 out of 14 (depending on if you consider following up and scoring as a scored penalty or not). That's a pretty decent record. Granted, two of his misses were his last two penalties, but overall, his record isn't that bad.

I didnt boo but i did let our "what the ****" when Barnes grabbed the ball for the penalty (as did many in the WSU), espcially with Lopez on the pitch who I assumed would have been the nominated penalty taker. I didnt hear any boos.

The MOTM is so unimportant in my book, if a player scores more than 1 goal then he gets it regardless. I have to say my MOTM was the big pole and I thought JFK and Ince had great games, but Barnes did IMHO the all important job of putting the ball in the net.

Just over three out of five is pretty decent ? Really ?

There was a reason he lost the penalty taking role. And that was he missed them. I hope next time he thinks of the team - and leaves it to David.

Yes, scoring more than you don't score is decent, especially when all are on target. Since saturday it is 10 or 11 out of 15. So, at least 2 out of 3 are scored.

Think of the team? Give over. Should he think of the team when a cross comes in, leaving it so that someone else can take a shot? Should he think of the team when our opponents sling a corner in, since it's the defender's job to defend? If Barnes is feeling confident, he has as much right as anyone else to take the penalty. Let the team decide, as they did on saturday whether to let him or not. Greer, Upson, Crofts all could have told him to leave it to Lopez (a man who isn't in much better form than Barnes at the moment, in fact I think even some of the "barnes haters" would rate lopez lower on recent form) if they felt it was best for the team. They did not.

If it is indeed 11 out of 15 that gives him a conversion rate of 73%, compared to the Premier League rate of 79%. So, as you say, not too shabby in the great scheme of penalties. Not everyone is Matt le Tissier or Ricky Lambert.

Decent ? Maybe. Not for me when we have a 100% player on the pitch. Move over Ricky, I will have this, I am feeling confident and have a 2 in 3 record.

Good argument. I had not thought of it that way. You clearly know your onions. I am out of this discussion.

You're up against a far superior footballing intellect. Wise move.
FFS DKM, have you learned nothing from your 10+ years of NSC'ing.

You reach the exact moment of:-
- Writing in capitals.
- Stating FACTS, not necessarily correct ones.
- Being a fan at Gillingham.
- Knowing a person in the club who said... .

and you use none of them, shame on you.

In the words of the only one who matters, from a BBC article today.

Brighton head coach Oscar Garcia was also pleased to see Barnes score.
"He deserves it," Garcia said. "He works hard, not just today but in all the games and practice."

I would work hard given the same opportunity....doesn't mean it automatically follows that I would be any good.....quantity vs quality.

OG hasn't a great deal of choice, wait until Dec/Jan when the others are back, probably get a clearer view then.

His comments could just as easily be politeness, OG does seem the diplomatic type.

Ridiculous argument. You would have to have some talent to be given the opportunity in the first place.

Agree with that.

Had he missed, how would the crowd have reacted?

Are you completely incapable of reading?.....eh?.....I said "given the same opportunity"...... this presupposes that the opportunity has been given.......got it now?.....perhaps if you have you can fill in your sidekick in the thread above.
