BNP membership list leaked online

Are you saying that they know who you vote for? I always thought that was private.

Yes. that how the parties know to knock on your door ensure you turn out to vote for them or, if you waiver a bit, to get you to vote for them.
Your vote is only secret in the ballot box.

Exactly !

I can understand if it was all stored on something like a memory stick and left on a public bus by accident.

Remember we are talking about computers. If your staff can easily access a whole dump of sensitive information it's not a huge leap for someone to access the information externally especially if the computer is connected to a network....

... like the internet.

So you can't really distinguish between dropping a memory stick on the bus or having the data stored in a manner in which a member of staff can dump the whole lot in one and walk out.

This isn't political correctness gone mad where the perpertrator of the crime gets away scott free and the victim is prosecuted.

Laws surrounding theft and misuse still apply, but there is FURTHER legislation applied to companies or individuals that hold data.

This legislation has been around for years, but today you don't need to break into the mainframe room with a disc the size of a dustbin lead, or a wheelbarrow at the ready to take out the ten miles or print out with you.

All you need is data stick, and can get a huge amount of text on them.

Again as far as I am aware, if they are on the electoral roll and have voted BNP. That data is obviously public domain.

We just done test caes at the LDA with Councel and our top lawyers about what questions can I ask businesses, store and release to other parties, that doesn't infringe the DPA.

Most organisations quoting that can't be released due to the DPA are frankly talking bollocks. AS long as the data isn't sensitive.

If you vote BNP or any other party, that data is recorded with your name and adress details. Voting isn't considered to be sensitive, your sexual persuassion is.

I bow to your greater knowledge, but I'm surprised. I thought membership of a political party was, as opposed to voting behaivour.

Didn't the lib dems get in trouble a while back for passing membership details onto a third party polling company ?

Well no one knocks on my door but then I probably confuse them :)

Oh BNP members now see being on the list as an honour

I'm assuming then that membership of a political party has to be declared, because they can't possibly know who officers choice to vote for at the polling station, can they ?

I noticed my ballot paper has little punch marks on it. Spooky

I noticed one of the voting officers looking up the word convidance in his dictionary when I left....I can't have spelt it wrong, surely ?

In all seriousness, I'm amazed that membership of the BNP is prohibited for police officers. Is this all in the wake of the 'institutionally racist' accusations ?

As the BNP is a perfectly legitimate political party.....albeit with some pretty nasty views....I'm surprised no-one has sought to contest this decision in the courts on the grounds of freedom of political expression.

The BNP do not have nasty views. That just your opinion and I respect that. I do find it strange that members of the BNP can't be members of the police force.

The revealing of the list has just united the far right by the looks of things

My mistake, my use of the term "nasty views" is wholly subjective and I should not have used it.......I do stand by it though :p

Having reading some press reports it seemed that the Data Protection may not be as strong in reality as I was taught.

If someone has stolen the list and the party has applied reasonable care, there hasn't been a breach.

All down to interpretation, and over to the lawyers

Griffin hasn't changed one bit. He is still the same dyed in the wool, ideologically committed upper class fascist (with a wealthy landowning fascist family going back generations) and it is very comical listening him trying to play the regular political guy.

The total abandonment of the working class (white and black) by the pathetic Tory charade which is New Labour has left an open door for his watered down Strasserism (ie pro working class electoral rhetoric hiding a far right agenda) It's not fashionable to be a little right wing bonehead like it was in the early 80s, and the old street fighters from the NF/BM days have either mellowed like Coventrygull appears to have done (how's Beaky, does he still go to games?) or been told to keep their mouths shut and their fists to themselves, at least in the name of the BNP. Which is why many have dual membership with headcase organisations like the Leeds based 'British People's Party' (Kev 'Pavement Biter' Watmough of Redwatch fame's mob)
I can assure people here that the core BNP membership are still fascists, their aims remain the same, and I am sure there are many middle aged supporters who will have winced when Griffo made that reference to 'skinhead oiks' on the Today programme just now. But he hates 'oiks' and has always thought of them like that - they're just not useful to him in the way they used to be.

The BNP are a bunch of dupes, organised by fascists, led by an upper class elitist. As in the 1970s they had a modicum of success because of the combination of an unpopular Labour government, an economic downturn, and the fact that they managed to persuade some people that they weren't a bunch of Nazis - but Rock Against Racism and the Anti Nazi League alerted people to their real nature, and (more importantly) Anti Fascist Action didn't bother with RAR lollipops and took them on on the streets. And when Thatcher got in and nicked their clothes by talking of Britain being 'swamped by an alien culture' most of the non headcase end of the far right support was happy to vote Tory and forgot about them.

Now we're back to where we were in the mid/late 70s again. People feel (justifiably) completely betrayed by New Labour, know the Tories are just more of the same only worse, and are looking for an alternative. The Greens are pathetic, and the proper Left simply do not have a clue. Hence the new, suited up BNP get a bit of a look in again. It won't last, but it is a sign of how totally bankrupt UK poilitics is in 2008. Democracy is about having choices, and at the moment, we have none.
