Read a bit about this today, and I'm frankly astonished nothing has been done about this before now. 14 people shot dead by our army, half of them teenagers, only one 'possibly' armed, many of them running away, crawling for cover or going to help the wounded, at least one waving a white flag. The event that escalated a horrible conflict that lasted decades. I'm ashamed that these people were representing our army, why would we want to cover it up?

Perhaps they should sentence him to 20 years and then release him as part of the GFA part 2?

He got a life sentence. He's an alcoholic who hasn't slept properly in the 15 years since he demobbed. He now lives in the ROI, married a Catholic girl from Belfast and, if it weren't for her his PTSD would have driven him to suicide years ago.

He told me How the residents of East Belfast would often send their dogs to attack squaddies sitting in the back of lorries. The dogs were dragged into the back and summarily castrated before being thrown back out..his best mate shot through the head and killed in Armagh and his sergeant had his leg blown off by a roadside bomb. He suffers from these experiences in his nightmares. He always will.

2 para mates from Worthing came back ....one had a paving slab dropped on his head from a car park .....the other had a petrol bomb incident which rendered his left arm useless....they had to sow it to his side to try to get it to heal ....i think they amputaded it in the end .....thats just 2 , sure there were many more , so where is the reciprocal loyalty from the ministry to these who gave theirs back then .......frankly it stenches to high heaven.

The original post I was replying to refers to the Good Friday Agreement as a reason why British soldiers should not be held to account for their actions that day. I was pointing out that the 13 civilians murdered on Bloody Sunday were not members of the IRA and the terms of the GFA are therefore an irrelevance.

Are you sure about that. How do you know?

After the longest running public inquiry presented no evidence that any of those killed or injured were members of the IRA are posed any risk on that day, I’m going to assume they were innocent civilians. Innocent Irish Catholic civilians sure.

I think lots on here still have the prejudice that Irish Catholic = IRA.

I don’t disagree.

Surely you will agree with the Saville Report that the 13 murdered did nothing wrong?
Therefore, the only wrong is that no one has been held to account for their murder?

An old friend of mine who sadly passed at a young age once told me a story about his tour of Northern Ireland -

He was walking down the street on patrol one day when a beautiful young lady across the road smiled at him and approached him. He smiled back and when the lady came up to him he thought blimey it must be my lucky day.

Unfortunately she proceeded to spit in his face and said I hope you and your whore mother die in pain.

Just gives you an idea of the hatred felt out there at the time.
