Read a bit about this today, and I'm frankly astonished nothing has been done about this before now. 14 people shot dead by our army, half of them teenagers, only one 'possibly' armed, many of them running away, crawling for cover or going to help the wounded, at least one waving a white flag. The event that escalated a horrible conflict that lasted decades. I'm ashamed that these people were representing our army, why would we want to cover it up?

Perhaps they should sentence him to 20 years and then release him as part of the GFA part 2?

He got a life sentence. He's an alcoholic who hasn't slept properly in the 15 years since he demobbed. He now lives in the ROI, married a Catholic girl from Belfast and, if it weren't for her his PTSD would have driven him to suicide years ago.

He told me How the residents of East Belfast would often send their dogs to attack squaddies sitting in the back of lorries. The dogs were dragged into the back and summarily castrated before being thrown back out..his best mate shot through the head and killed in Armagh and his sergeant had his leg blown off by a roadside bomb. He suffers from these experiences in his nightmares. He always will.

Apart from the inequality of the GFA. How can people who our Government know committed awful acts of violence , far worse than these Para's have a letter to say its OK that you did this don't worry we will forget it all to make it easier to settle the Province down. Now we say to soldiers who were sent there under stupid conditions ''Oh well we don't include you in this'' only the real terrorists. Isnt our Government the Government of Northern Ireland as well. Talk about hanging our guys out to dry!

always been the way .....bureaucrats dry rooting the front line soldiers.....look at gallipoli ffs.......they landed them on the wrong beach straight into 15,000 dug in , turkish marksmen.....the allied forces had been pounding a different beach with heavy artillery all night with the express purpose of softening up the defence and clearing a path for the landing forces.......you can bet your last euro that this is just another diversionary , red herring to give the public something else to be outraged about , as if there isn't enough already ....country's ****ed.

2 para mates from Worthing came back ....one had a paving slab dropped on his head from a car park .....the other had a petrol bomb incident which rendered his left arm useless....they had to sow it to his side to try to get it to heal ....i think they amputaded it in the end .....thats just 2 , sure there were many more , so where is the reciprocal loyalty from the ministry to these who gave theirs back then .......frankly it stenches to high heaven.

And many murdered by the IRA were not military members! You stupid fella.

Thanks for the insult.

The original post I was replying to refers to the Good Friday Agreement as a reason why British soldiers should not be held to account for their actions that day. I was pointing out that the 13 civilians murdered on Bloody Sunday were not members of the IRA and the terms of the GFA are therefore an irrelevance.

Are you sure about that. How do you know?

After the longest running public inquiry presented no evidence that any of those killed or injured were members of the IRA are posed any risk on that day, I’m going to assume they were innocent civilians. Innocent Irish Catholic civilians sure.

I think lots on here still have the prejudice that Irish Catholic = IRA.

And the 7 civilians killed in the Aldershot bombing in 1972 were mainly cleaners. I’m afraid 2 wrongs never make a right.

I don’t disagree.

Surely you will agree with the Saville Report that the 13 murdered did nothing wrong?
Therefore, the only wrong is that no one has been held to account for their murder?

An old friend of mine who sadly passed at a young age once told me a story about his tour of Northern Ireland -

He was walking down the street on patrol one day when a beautiful young lady across the road smiled at him and approached him. He smiled back and when the lady came up to him he thought blimey it must be my lucky day.

Unfortunately she proceeded to spit in his face and said I hope you and your whore mother die in pain.

Just gives you an idea of the hatred felt out there at the time.

Many see it as the day when "war" was declared in Northern Ireland; you can have your protest marches for civil rights but we are going to unleash unrestrained armed paratroopers on you. Can you imagine that happening anywhere else in the British isles?

I doubt it. Imagination is not something that is too forthcoming for some. Let's remain stuck in our own little silos instead.

The IRA committed some heniuos, unforgivable crimes and so did the British against the Irish. You can’t treat a nation like that and expect no comeback.
Should the soldiers be prosecuted. Probably. So should the IRA.

I fear we are walking into another mess here. My family in Belfast are sick of both sides and wish they’d all grow up and let the country get on with it.

Classy to post some "..but what about" on the 50th anniversary. Those on the list could be remembered on any day, but naturally you have to pick the one when 14 unarmed peope were killed by soldiers.
