Quite. And this ludicrous bloody transfer window doesn't help. For Blatter to start bleating on about 'modern slavery' is hypocritical in the extreme, bearing in mind that it is FIFA who restrict the movement of players throughout the European season.

Are the players 'helpless victim', correct me if I am wrong but they did agree to sign the contract without a gun to their head.
Also are soldiers therefore slaves, they would have to buy out their contract if they wish to leave. Come to think of it, if you are on a short term contract you are not allowed to just walk, and lets face it, footballers are well paid freelancers on short term contracts.

seems to contradict himself a bit too. he supports a long contract the player can buy out, but with the massive wages involved you effectivly price the player out of the market. hows that much different?

Ronaldo has derived significant value from his long-term deal at Man Utd because it guarantees him a level of income regardless of whether he turns shit, gets injured, is sold against his will etc.
But it takes two to make a contract. What about a responsibility to your teammates, the fans, the manager who signed you and helped make you what you are?
Surely if the player is under contract and being handsomely rewarded by a successful club Blatter should support Man Utd? After all, nobody put a gun to Ronaldo's head when he signed that 4 year deal...

I keep hearing this, but how do we really KNOW ?
Maybe EVERYONE should sign their contract on the pitch in front of the fans just before kickoff, a-la Bryan Robson when he first signed for Man U.
Its the only way to be sure.

Easy that is possibly the WORST idea I have EVER heard. Just imagine the potential for snipers. DK brings Antonio Valencia down to the Withdean to sign the contract, but installs 4 seperate snipers in the away end, masquerading (sp) as Palace fans. What choice does Antonio have other than to sign?

The Bosman ruling was supposed to allow players free movement but instead it created a scenario where players are offered and sign long 4-5 years deals which more often than not are not completed.
The clubs have an interest in securing a longer deal as if the player wants to leave the player / club buying have to pay out the remainder of the contract so it protects the club financially.
The Bosman did give players powers but when introduced they probably did not realise quite how much as now the player only has to say 'I want to go to X' and clubs have no option but to cash in or lose out.

A ll I'm saying is that people, whether they have a contract or not shouldn't be forced to stay where they don't want to be.
I'm not sure what the answer to this is as you can forsee problems with this but I firmly believe that if a player was held at Brighton against his will just because he had a contract then I would doubt the effort he was putting in. Needless to say he wouldn't be a fans favourite so why not take the money from a transfer and get someone that does want to play for you.

In the meantime, Bosman's wages were reduced as he was no longer a first-team player. He took his case to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg and sued for restraint of trade citing FIFA's rules regarding football, specifically Article 17. After a tough legal battle he won his case, and on December 15, 1995 the court ruled that the system as it was constituted a restriction on the free movement of workers and was prohibited by Article 39(1) of the EC Treaty. Bosman and all other EU football players were given the right to a free transfer at the end of their contracts, with the provision that they were transferring from a club within one EU Association to a club within another EU Association. Prior to that, professional clubs in parts of Europe (but not, for example, in Spain and France) were able to prevent players from joining another club even if their contracts had expired. [In Britain, Transfer Tribunals had been in place since 1981 to solve disputes over fees between clubs when transferring players at the end of their contracts.] In addition to this, a player can sign a pre-contract with another club for a free transfer if the players' contract with their existing club has 6 months or less remaining. The Bosman ruling can be compared to the Curt Flood case in baseball, which led to the elimination of the reserve clause and the advent of free agency.
