Blackpool: Cultural cul de sac?

Blackpool is like the rest of the north, cold, wet, drab and full of whinging chain smoking northeners.

The only good thing about the north is the south!

However I believe that some of them can spell whingeing and northerners correctly. Not that I'm into mindless stereotyping myself, for example inferring that central Brighton is now a cesspit of drug addicts, drunks and beggars.

I would recommend the Vincent Hotel in Southport, very chic boutique hotel, very nice bar & restaurant. It's not that far south of Blackpool though not sure how you get there by road. Word of warning though, it's part owned by Gerrard and if Liverpool are at home the same day you'll probably see plenty of them and various ex players about as many of them live a couple of miles down the road in Formby.

Tootle up the road a bit to Lancaster, historic town and a good selection of hotels/guest houses. Better still, splash out at the Midland Hotel at Morecombe Bay, they often do weekend special deals.

Run by Claire and Mark,they are lovely people and run a very good establishment.It won't be cheap,but it will be good.Visit the website and Tripadvisor it.
We stayed in their previous place and couldn't believe we were in Blackpool!

I lived in Lytham St Annes for 19 years so know the area pretty well. Blackpool has its charms as mentioned above as well as its low points. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is! Enjoy it for what it is and go with the flow is my advice; I mean it's a one-off! Our game their also happens to be the first weekend of schools half term this season, so it will be packed with illuminations trippers. I don't recommend you think about driving the seven miles of it on the Saturday. It could take hours! Walking from the Tower or taking the tram could be fun and good entertainment if the weather's okay. As for accommodation if you are approaching the place with the viewpoint you express, then Lytham St Annes is the place to stay. The Taps in Lytham is a great pub. St Annes has many better quality hotels of which The Grand (Lytham not Blackpool) is a very good 4*, as is The Clifton Arms in Lytham. Yes it's a shame what's being staged on Saturday night at The Grand Theatre catering for the illuminations traffic. There's Ken Dodd on Sunday night. The theatre itself is one of the loveliest in all of England. After the illuminations finish, it stages similar plays to those you'd find at the Theatre Royal, so I wouldn't agree that Blackpool is entirely a cultural cul-de-sac.

Had planned to go to Blackpool but gave up on the whole idea as people kept slagging off the area and it was £200 + to go by train. Plus could not find any where half decent to stay over. Will put my efforts into Wolves away instead.

Lancaster is nice (Waterwitch pub especially).

Morecambe has possibly the best view across the bay to the lake district - sunsets especially good, but make sure you keep looking out to sea and keep you back to the town, because it wasn't much cop last time I went there.

I went to Blackpool three times in the early 90s for union conferences and had some good nights out there.

I went there thinking that I was working class and came back realising I was middle class.

Blackpool is not cultural in the slightest but can be fun. Go to the Manchester pub on the front a couple of hours before kick off for a great build up to the game....only pub I know that plays GOod Old Sussex By the Sea for visiting Brighton fans. Lytham and St Anne's are very nice....good hotels and pubs. Time hasn't been kind to Blackpool. It's one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Lots of the B&Bs are deserted.....however, they have a decent football team and Tom Ince is one of the best players in the division. Will be a tough game.

I think it is, went on a stag do about 5 years ago and it was as we stayed a bit too close for comfort.

Luckily I will be staying near Southport that weekend. Unluckily you can't get a fast boat across the Irish Sea to Blackpool which would be the most sensible way to go.

Other than car it's usually a bus to Preston then get the train.

Here's a thought. Tell the wife that you won't cheapen your love by caving in to her shit. If the only way you can enjoy the togger in peace is to take her out for a cultural evening in return then, my friend, I suggest that the next time she wants to trail endlessly round f***ing bluewater or the county mall or wherever then you must insist that, in return, she gives you a swallow job while you enjoy a cold lager whilst watching the test match.
