Blackpool: Cultural cul de sac?

Hi All

me and the partner are off to Blackpool for the away match. In order to get a pass to enjoy the football my wife wants in return a good night out and a good boutique style Hotel. Having checked the 'entertainment' for that weekend I have found the following line up:

Chubby Brown
Roy Walker
Cannon and Ball

call me a cultural snob but all these are vulgar and shit. I try not to be ignorant about our Northern cousins (some of my best friends know some) but that appalling line up is enough to make you reach for the Andy Capp book of Jokes. Anyone recommend a venue or hotel to get me off the hook?

You'll be relieved to know that the appalling Norbreck Castle Hotel is fully sold out for the Friday night before the Albion game. I was about to recommend that you avoid it at all costs - unless, of course, you are genuinely interested in discovering the worst the British hotel industry is capable of.

You could always try Lytham St Anne's. It's Lancashires equivalent of Eastbourne. In a lot of the hotels, you will need to wear a tie for dinner We'll be staying at my Mother in Laws, in Lytham, which is almost as bad

I used to run a nightclub in Blackpool, it has it's own charms as a town, but they are few and far between.

They should turn it into a theme park for the TV show "Life On Mars", as it's the nearest you will get to reliving 1975.

We were near there last year for a week and went to the Pleasure Beach for a day and that was it.

Why do you have to stay in Blackpool just because we are playing them. Surely you could head for Manchester or Liverpool for a better night out. Have been to Blackpool twice and it is a dump but obviously enough people like it the way it is and that's why it continues.

I lived in Lytham St Annes for 19 years so know the area pretty well. Blackpool has its charms as mentioned above as well as its low points. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is! Enjoy it for what it is and go with the flow is my advice; I mean it's a one-off! Our game their also happens to be the first weekend of schools half term this season, so it will be packed with illuminations trippers. I don't recommend you think about driving the seven miles of it on the Saturday. It could take hours! Walking from the Tower or taking the tram could be fun and good entertainment if the weather's okay. As for accommodation if you are approaching the place with the viewpoint you express, then Lytham St Annes is the place to stay. The Taps in Lytham is a great pub. St Annes has many better quality hotels of which The Grand (Lytham not Blackpool) is a very good 4*, as is The Clifton Arms in Lytham. Yes it's a shame what's being staged on Saturday night at The Grand Theatre catering for the illuminations traffic. There's Ken Dodd on Sunday night. The theatre itself is one of the loveliest in all of England. After the illuminations finish, it stages similar plays to those you'd find at the Theatre Royal, so I wouldn't agree that Blackpool is entirely a cultural cul-de-sac.
