No, this is exactly what I tried to explain to you previously. Player with a year or less left on their contract is actually going to be bought / sold for under their peak value (especially when they want away and we have a replacement, i.e. Biss) whereas a player with four years left, who is happy and who we haven't replaced, and possibly can't, (i.e. Cucurella) will be sold for a lot more than their perceived market value or not at all.

There's also the issue(unless I've missed something) he's got an ongoing legal issue

Yes, that is exactly what I expected someone to come along and say. It doesn't stop me (and it seems I'm far from being the only one!) thinking that £25M (if indeed that is the fee - we'll never know) is a very, very good bargain price for Spurs!

Not as big a bargain as a free transfer NEXT summer.

Yeah good deal for Spurs, undoubtedly.
But probably a decent result for us too.
I was concerned he would be the first of several to run their contracts down and leave us with nothing to show for our investment.

The key point here is the Albion being seen not to stand in the way of a player going on to apparently better things. That helps recruitment and the confidence of existing players that they will be similarly well looked-after.

The initial fee being slightly lower than anticipated even at around £30m (not that we will ever know the actual amounts) but with add-ons (which, once again, we are unlikely to find out much about) may reflect doubts about the player's, er, lifestyle. And it's very unusual to get Spurs to stump up before the final days of a transfer window.

bigger picture and all that.

good bit of business, been a great player for us. we have replacements already here, so not really concerned on this one.

Definitely this.

All the brilliant football we've played under Potter has been fantastic. But if there is one consistent frustration about supporting the Albion it is the pathetic mismanagement of finances by Tony Bloom and his team of senior executives.

They are literally clueless when it comes to money and making deals.

Keeping him this season undoubtedly helped us stay up.

So add on the extra prize money we gained from finishing 9th on the final day and add that to his fee.

PL survival and some wonderful memories isn't nothing, but yes a profit on the fee would be nice as well

Sad day.

Gutted it's spurs he's going to. There's not a team/squad in world football that he wouldn't improve so to see him go to the shittest of the 'big 6' is disappointing. Better than Newcastle or Villa, but still.

Maybe now the other clubs have seen the price they'll come in.

Great player, sad he's going.

So thats 88million we've made from selling 3 players in 12 months? It's all beginning to come together isn't it?

I just hope we don't end up in the 'Southampton syndrome' by becoming reasonably successful and losing our best players each year.

When Southampton were broadly finishing around mid table for several seasons, they were forced to sell many of their better players such as :
Ings, Van Dijk, Mane, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Lovren, Vestergard, Hojbjerg, Bale and Wanyama to name but a few.

Nice problem to have and I'm not grumbling about Bissouma leaving as he has given us good service, but it's always hard replacing such good established players such as him. The positive I suppose in all of this is that with Mwepu and Caicedo looking comfortable in the middle of the park with other young players in the pipeline, the future is still bright.

I just can't help but feel due to his contract running down £25m for such a good player is a steal on Spur's part.

I think in this sort of situation, the player and the buying clubs have all of the power. Yes, we could've said 'We want X or else he's not going anywhere, but that risks a) a pissed off player; b) missing out on anything if he stays and leaves on a free at the end of the season and c) a player who is running down his contract, having not got the move he wanted.

The only option was to sell and then it's up to the potential buyers how much they want to spend. There will be a longlist of Spuds targets, so if Biss was priced too high, then they would simply move on. Better, IMO, to take the money and run.

Isn’t that exactly the business plan ? It’s why we have invested so much in the academy. We are not going to become a big six club because we cannot compete. In order to do so we would have to sell out to a religious fundamentalist or mafia gang. Not for me.

If we are to make progress we need to keep refreshing the squad and support the newer signings who we have invested heavily in. £30m for a non UK player with 12 months to go is good business. Hope he does well, but not too well.
I seriously think he was expendable.
