Chris Birchall has issued a sign me plea to Albion.

Trialist Birchall is hoping chairman Dick Knight will sanction a two or three-year deal today to bring him to Withdean.

The 24-year-old former Coventry midfielder played in a 4-0 defeat for the reserves against Reading at Lancing last night and he also featured in an in-house match at the training ground on Monday.

Birchall said: “I have been here for nine or ten days now and I am just waiting to see if Micky Adams wants me to stay.

“There is nothing more that I want at the moment. He knows I want to stay, I don’t want to go anywhere else. I have an option on the table in America (with San Jose Earthquakes) but that is something I don’t really want to do at this stage of my career. I’d rather stay in England.

“I’ve played under him before at Coventry after he signed me from Port Vale. I like his man-management, I like coming into training every day and that is something I haven’t felt for a couple of years since Micky left Coventry.

“It’s always good to have a manager who wants to play you, knows what you can do and has confidence in you. If he wants me to sign I would be absolutely delighted.

“Preferably I will find out today. I think it’s just up to him if he gets the all-clear from the chairman. Ideally I want to sign a two or three-year deal, because I want to be able to concentrate on my football and settle down here with my family.

"If I was only here until the end of the season then so be it but that makes it difficult, because you can't settle down."

Birchall is due to play in three World Cup qualifiers for Trinidad and Tobago between now and the end of the season but he does not regard his international commitments as a barrier to joining the Seagulls.

He said: "It caused a few problems at Port Vale and sometimes at Coventry. Micky thought I was a bit jet-lagged but I was flying from Trinidad to Gatwick then all the way up to Manchester and back to Coventry where as if I was settled here the flight would only be back to Gatwick.

"I would be back to training the day before matches. That is really up to the gaffer, I can't help that. I have got to play for Trinidad. He understands that, he never had a problem with the World Cup qualifiers at Coventry, only friendlies."

Sign him up????????

Sign him up... yes..... I'm convinced and I really don't think we'll find much better. Did anyone see him against Reading?

What's conviced you Sully? I'm on the fence on this one as I haven't seen him play.

I kind of agree but as far as I’m aware he’s a free agent so wouldn’t cost us anything, well only his wages. Surely he’s worth a gamble?

Ignoring the excuse about his jet lag being from the Gatwick to Manchester leg of his journey I say sign him up, he's gotta be better than we currently have.

Just been reading the Reserves game thread. Distinctly lukewarm reports on Birchall. Tho suppose it's hard to shine in a 4-0 reversal. Another week's trial?

IMO hes easily a championship quality player. Has bags of experience playing in the world cup and all and i believe he would be a fantastic signing. Bring him in:albion2:

He's got a decent pedigree, I say give him a deal until the end of next season. He mentions a 3 year deal, which would be far too long though.

Going on yesterdays reserve game, I wouldnt sign him
Birchall and Loft played in middle of midfield, Cox and Brinkhirst played on the wings.

Loft was the best of the midfield quarter, Birchall the worst of the four.

You can tell he has a good touch, but his passes were going astray, and he struggled on a bobbly pitch. I am not going to say he is shit or anything, but he didnt play well by any means. Didnt put in a crunching challenge, didnt make an outstanding pass and didnt have a shot of note

I gather from last night’s posts that you were at the game so you are better informed than me but don’t you think it’s worth a gamble?

Yes I was, he probably is worth a gamble, purely on the fact that it will stop us playing centre backs in the middle of midfield. Yesterday he didnt shine, but it was one game on a dodgy pitch.

Yesterday Loft looked like a better player than Birchall in centre midfield, but would Loft get in the first team in centre midfield, I very much doubt.

It is probably worth a gamble on signing him until the end of the season, he wont cost us anything, and we wont lose a transfer fee if he decides to go to America

Lets all face it, theres not much better out there we can get. Were a bottom 5 3rd division team playing in an athletics track. Were getting a lad with world cup and championship experience. I say hes worth the gamble:thumbsup:

I was at the game last night and in my opinion, is he worth the gamble ?

After last nights performance we'd be mad to sign him for a 2 or 3 year deal as he has been quoted to say...

He didn't perform well but I would maybe be interested in seeing him over a few games to see how he really settles as everyone is commenting on his experience. Can we loan for a few games.. Dont see why not..

He seems dead keen though, or is that just desperation too??

Looking forward to whippin' Leeds on Sat.. :flameboun

The report said he played a game on Monday, then the Reserves on Tuesday. Probably asking a bit much for him to have a blinder.

He made a couple of good long passes and was difficult to shake off the ball, but he didn't tackle and doesn't have the height to compete in the air. At least Micky knows this already - so he may have ideas about what he wants from him.

To my mind it would be too much of a gamble to sign him for anything more than 6 months - and even that would be dodgy. Just because he's an international doesn't mean anything - look at Robbie Savage.

Maybe we should be looking at Reading reserves. Isn't this the 2nd time they've stuffed us this season? Would Coppell help us out or is he pissed with DK for "transferring" him (allegedly)
