I think that we should do one fo two options, either;

a) sign him for the rest of the season so that he can put in some amazing performances and then leave for a better club
or;
b) Put him on a 5 year contract and never actually play him.

Anything else would be far too sensible!

In truth, I would love Birchall to sign - he was my 'adopted overseas soccer hero' in the 2006 world cup and I never thought I would have the opportunity to see him in the stripes.

What's conviced you Sully? I'm on the fence on this one as I haven't seen him play.

TBH being a bit tongue in cheek but when I did see him a couple fo years ago he seemed good enough for a low championship side... he's got a good relationship with MA and he seems keen so worth a punt for half a season at least. Plus he's free.

Yes I was, he probably is worth a gamble, purely on the fact that it will stop us playing centre backs in the middle of midfield. Yesterday he didnt shine, but it was one game on a dodgy pitch.

Yesterday Loft looked like a better player than Birchall in centre midfield, but would Loft get in the first team in centre midfield, I very much doubt.

It is probably worth a gamble on signing him until the end of the season, he wont cost us anything, and we wont lose a transfer fee if he decides to go to America

I wonder how match fit he is... when was the last time he played?

Perhaps worth another look. We're not in a position to sign players who stand out from the crowd if we're honest. At least it's a promising sign that Adams is looking at players who are desperate to play first team kickball, as opposed to "past it" twats on ridiculous wages like Robbie Savage.

Having seen the game last night i would say no, but the centre of midfield seemed to be bypassed by both sides.
Mostly long balls were played into the channels so it was difficult to judge Birchall on one appearance.
On another note Loft was crap until last 15 minutes of the match, he played like someone who knows he has no future at the club.
Was quite impressed with Brinkhurst`s pace but Reading were a lot better man for man.

Sign him... he sounds keen, which is a plus, and he would struggle to do worse than our current central midfielders (Livermore exempted due to injury; still think he may come good for us)...

Been a while since we have had a international player in our squad,so sign him up and let the dodgy haircuts ensue! This may also help to bring in lots n lots of trinidadians and tobagoians hence solving the apparent lack of frank brunos at withdean see other threads for details. :thumbsup:

If as I think he is a free agent then play him against Leeds and see what he is made of ................if its all good then have the contract waiting for him to sign as he comes off the pitch otherwise dirty Leeds might get there first.

You can't play trialists in competitive games, otherwise not a bad idea.

Take your point but I don't think he would be classed as a trialist he is a free agent ...............and played a whole game for the reserves yesterday ......and if not then sign him for a few weeks

Free agents go on trials to clubs. The club would risk points deductions by playing him unless he signed a contract first. You can only play trialists/free agents in NON competitive matches.

Yeah, he could be signed as a non contract player. Couldn't be much worse than the alternatives.
