Billy Sharp - tweaked his ankle a little bit. (but with God's grace, might live)

I feel physically sick. Not the result... that doesnt matter. Latest report on local radio says Bill's leg is brokem in 3 places. Hayter has broken ankle.
Thats 7 first teamers long term and the season is 1 day old.
Didnt believe we could have the horrendous injury situation we had last year... but here we are.
Congratulations Brighton hope you do well.
Its a devastating blow for us.

That's very sad if true. It didn't look like a horror tackle at the time... no great reaction from any of the players on either side.

I hope he's OK.... and good luck for the rest of the season.

Yes. Very lucky. It was very malicious I feel, two footed from behind and nowhere near the ball.

Our players obviously felt a bit battered and bruised at half time, and resolved to assign one player to 'leave their mark' on the star man - it happens all the time. The player does it knowing they will get a yellow, and hoping they knock the player (and often the team) off their stride - teams do this against Arsenal all the time hence the huge number of serious injuries their players suffer and the number of yellow/red cards the opposition teams get.

Basically, we sent someone out there in the second half to 'do' Sharp and maximise our chances of winning. Fair enough, I say - that's exactly what they did with Lua-Lua in the first half.

I have highlighted the possibly libellous bits for you

Wow, I didn't expect people who are clearly so experienced in watching football to be so naive about the reality of professional football. Teams do what they have to do to WIN. Do you not find it odd that Doncaster put in several very hard tackles on KLL exclusively, and the one player we happen to put in one exceptionally forceful challenge on is their goalscorer and only real threat? A tackle from behind, with both feet being buried in the player's ankle?

Guys, I know we love our club and some people are 'loyal' enough to fight and even kill because they 'love their club so much' - but there is being naive and there is being ignorant of the facts. Players are frequently told before and during matches to 'keep tight' to XYZ player, and 'let them know you're there'. I am NOT saying he meant to break his leg, but he definitely badly fouled him with no realistic prospect of getting the ball.

And it won us the game.

Why? Do you not believe teams do this kind of thing?

I know what it is with you, you're from Denton. I remember one of my nephews playing against Denton's U13 side a while ago. They were dirty little bastards so if you played for that club you wouldn't have too much trouble believing that players are told to clog the opposition. I might add despite the dirty play of that Denton team they still lost.

A slightly more measured view from the BBC...

"Worryingly for injury-ravaged Doncaster, Sharp was stretchered off following a robust challenge from Lewis Dunk after the restart and the departure of their talisman rocked the visitors."

The other part of your post that was incorrect was your description of the tackle. "two footed from behind"!? Do me a favour. Lewis was late but only just and was definitely not two footed or from behind.

Some examples:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_in_sports#Violence_by_athletes

"Athletes sometimes resort to violence, in hopes of injuring and intimidating opponents. Such incidents may be part of a strategy developed by coaches or players."

Roy Keane on Alfe Inge Haaland: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/football-league/roy-keane-in-quotes-1049865.html

"Even in the dressing room afterwards, I had no remorse. My attitude was, f*** him. What goes around comes around. He got his just rewards. He f***ed me over and my attitude is an eye for an eye."

On the incident:

"I'd waited long enough. I f****** hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you c***."

Grow up lads. The challenge was horrendous. I've seen it a dozen times on video. When you get a chance to see it, you'll withdraw your comments.

It was decided yards before. It was high. It was from behind. It was from an angle whereby there was virtually no chance whatsoever of getting the ball. It was a potential career-ender and you will not see a more clear-cut straight red.

The difference with the tackles by Spurr & Naylor was clear. Neither of those were from behind. Both were reckless and fully deserved yellow cards, but both were from angles that allowed the Brighton player to take evasive action. Dunk's gave Sharp no chance. THAT is why tackles from behind are so dangerous, and why they are supposed to result in red cards when contact is made like this.

An appalling lax decision by the ref and I suspect he will be sickened when he sees the replays.

I could be wrong, but I believe jcdenton is a reference to the character in the computer game Deus Ex.

I don't think it's got anything to do with Denton's U13 football team.

You'd be right.

My vision is augmented. That's probably why only I and one other actually seem to have seen the incident we are discussing.

IF Denton and Stubbs prove right... I will be SICKENED, and it will take the gloss of what was a GREAT day.

I'm going out now. I will watch it later. I HOPE it is not as deliberate and nasty as is being suggested.
