Yesterday according to sofascore.com in 57 minutes he attempted 5 ground duels and won zero.

Caicedo, in 33 minutes, attempted 6, winning 4.

Perhaps it's just a confidence thing, but it's just not happening for Billy at present.

It's just not his game though. Whatever the hell a 'ground duel' is. I'm not sure he can cut it in a 2 in midfield unless the other one is a monster. His game is on the ball, where he looks good and his passing attempts are mostly progressive and positive. Trying get the ball forward. He's going to be a useful player but only in specific circumstances. I don't think one on one wrestling for the ball with Phillip Billings is particularly it.

Thought that Billy had a nice tidy game.
Must be really tough to adapt to EPL midfield with so little game time.
Would be better alongside Alex and Or Moises.
One thing I really liked was the way he was telling other players where to pass the ball.

I thought he did ok bearing in mind none of the first choice 3 were there to guide him at all and he is basically 5th choice behind Gross. Passing is decent moves the ball well but isn’t a player to break up attacks. Not a bad player to have in the squad at all.

I see Billy as Lallana's understudy for the more advanced role. He's less suited to the deeper pivot role where its about quick accurate passes to draw the press.

Groß seemed to be in more open positions first half an hour and Gilmour didn't see that much of the ball. He improved as the game went on and was at his best in the period before he was subbed. Plenty of positive aspects, and he's only young and can only get better.

Plus, anyone will look less capable than a pairing of Mac Allister and Caicedo...

I thought Gilmour was ok yesterday, but struggled in a 2 man midfield where he might normally get some support from a number 10(or play as the 10). Whereas, us going 4-4-2 yesterday left our centre mids a little exposed

According to Pat Nevin, who works for Chelsea TV, so he saw a lot of Billy previously.

Talking about a game for Scotland v Denmark,

Nevin explained (BBC): “Billy plays in the Jorginho position – he sits in front of the defence and he controls it. It is like clockwork the way he passes it and moves it about. In the first half, the team wasn’t playing particularly well at all, and he wasn’t playing in the position that suits him.

“Breaking forward from midfield is not Billy’s game. Billy’s game is controlling from a deeper area. Yes, he will break forward sometimes, but when he dropped back in that area we got more control of the game.”

I think he will come good, possibly next season when he is likely to fill a vacancy in centre midfield and play more regularly.

I think I said it in the match thread but I thought that 4-4-2 was a bit of a mistake. It didn’t work against Liverpool with Mac and Gross in the middle, they got overrun till RDZ changed it, so I don’t know why he thought it would work with Gilmour and Gross.

Let's face it he was chucked in at the deep end yesterday with all our other 3 out, thought he did well, always offering for the ball. Definitely a player in there.

Thought he was OK, needs a physical presence alongside him though. In Football Manager terms, I'd put his most-suited position as the 'deep lying playmaker' behind two other centre mids.

Haven't seen what he's really capable of still I feel but some very disappointing performances, and I've been at every game he's had minutes.

Slightly better yesterday but wasn't helped partnering Gross in midfield and playing 2 up top, which was surprising. Another midfielder would have taken the pressure off and perhaps balanced us, but absolutely understandable not starting Moises.

I thought he did OK. If Undav had tucked away one of his 3 misses then with a lead it would have given Billy more space to pass into.

Exactly. Positionally, he is quite poor and didn’t put himself in a position to regain possession once lost, it also enabled Plucky to play around him several times. Gross didn’t have a great game either IMO, but some of that was due to him covering BG.

Much as I love the boy BG dearly, it's not really working here. Tho probably working better than Undav. Two weakest links sadly
