Inspired by @The Maharajah of Sydney nice win on Uncle Tony’s gee gee

What’s the most you’ve ever picked up on a bet?

New Years Eve 2022 I went a tad bananas when Mitoma made it 2-4 against Arsenal as that was the final leg of a match bet builder I’d done that won me just over £1200

Never anything massive as I don’t stake much, and I’m rubbish at football betting. Had a very tidy win though backing Dubois and correct round/method against AJ. As a result I’m well ahead for the year…

I rarely bet, I used to put 50p on the grand national as a kid, around the time of red rum, bastard horse beat mine in his second win I think it was. However I did in 2011 following a cycle ride to Paris to watch the tour de france final stage, put a tenner on Bradley Wiggins to win the following years race. It was the first bet Id put on anything for about 25 years, and I kept the betting receipt pinned to the notice board, a year later Wiggins won, made me £100. My last bet, and biggets win by about £99.50

Thank you Sir Brad

Surprising it took 6 years.... for 90%+ of people who bet regularly, a relatively very big win is not good news in the long run.

Much better to stay bobbing along,
spending the money you can roughly afford to each year, than to hit "the big time"...

£400 on a 4 horse thing many years ago. Biggest football one was £80 on a correct 4-0 result against Wrexham in 1995. Never really done that much sports betting.

£99 (£3 @ 33/1) on West Ham 1 Preston 0 with Bobby Z to score the goal, play-off final can’t remember the year. Not a huge win but felt good at the time

Living with his mum in Carlisle I think helped its mighty cheap living up there and his mum kept some restraint

The Avenue then Maloncho
I used to be quite a large punter in the 80s, mainly Hove Dogs on a Thursday constantly leaving me skint for the weekend, meeting my future wife subsequently led to “that Avenue of pleasure being closed” which with hindsight I was very greatful for.

However in 1992 for a stake of 45 pence I won a “life changing amount”

Having just bought our first house we very quickly realised we were naive and had seriously miscalculated and over stretched ourselves, we were both earning but hardly enough to feed the cat. Repossession and the path that often takes you on was imminent.
I did continue with my 8 from 10 on Littlewoods as you have to have hope don’t you?
Anyhoo, eureka! I checked the Sunday paper and come up 8 score draws and a no score draw bloody hell!
There were quite a lot of draws that week so new I wouldn’t be a millionaire but hey, it was gonna be more than a round of drinks.

The fact we kept our house continued us on that path to this day, yeah I’ve never got more than twenty quid in my pocket but we never go hungry and I’ve got something to get the boy through Uni and leave him a few bob.

That “life changing” amount was £7025

Won 8k on the postcode lottery a couple of years ago.
Whilst Matched Betting I ran out of money on the exchange one day with a £50 free bet left hanging, so I stuck it on a horse at 9/1 and it won! Thanks Bet365! I was banned by them not long after that :(

It might not seem like a lot now, but it was a huge amount to me way back when it happened. On 1st January 1990 I gave up smoking, and put the (rounded up) £2 per day that I saved into a pot to splurge on the Cheltenham Festival in March that year. By 11th March I had saved up £140. The first couple of days bets were disastrous. Then came the Gold Cup. I asked my boss at work if he had a tip. He suggested Norton’s Coin at 100/1. I said “you must be having’ a laugh”. I asked for his logic, which amounted to nothing more than his Mum’s maiden name was Norton. I did some research on the horse, owned by a Welsh dairy farmer, it had no pedigree or lineage, and the owner only had 3 horses. It was so ridiculous I didn’t even bother going each way, I just stuck £3 on the nose. It romped home and I collected £303 winnings. Which in today’s money is about £900. Luvvly jubbly. 34 years ago, blimey.

Sydney .
£2,200 at the 1994 World Cup.
Had a £50 double for both Romania @ 4/1 and Mexico @ 8/1 to win their respective Groups.
Happened to be in Portofino for Mexico’s final group game against Italy who were also in their group and when the Mexicans equalised, my wife, her sister and brother-in-law, who were out in the town said there was complete silence except for a lone loudly cheering & yelling voice coming over above the rooftops …. mine !!!

Had a few in the high thousands ..about £6800 on Fujaira Prince in the Ebor and £4k when Lamtarra won the Arc in 95

Got this running on to tonight as it happens with a similar accu .. so £4k+ if City of Troy wins the classic 😁

I was titting around with Betfair from early 2020 to about 6 months ago, after never being a gambler. I definitely won > £1,000 on an Italian team winning a home EL tie. I also bet successfully on UK and US politics.

Overall down a bit, but nothing damaging or sad, I kept a special bank account to keep tabs. Then ditched the habit ... I don't want to end up losing.

I've kept the Betfair account open just in case a printing money opportunity ever arises. One of the best was when Potter decided to play a rubbish team against Villa's almost best 11 at the Amex in a League Cup game. Loads of nsc'ers piled in. Thank you Graham.

£282.25 for 25p stake both teams to score, ten games. Ladbrokes severly reduced the odds after that
I'm still waiting for my regular BTTS to come in. About 5 years or so ago, I noticed both teams scored in every single match in both L1 and L2. Since then, I have done a £1 acca on the same thing. The odds are usually astronomical - I only need to it come once :)

Although it's now become a bit of an albatross around my neck, as it's one of those things I have to do now, as obviously the week I don't do it, it will come in.

£1,600 off a 10p bet

A few years back I had an ten fold acca (all draws) but also bet on getting 8/10 of them correct (45 combinations) so 10p a line cost me £4.50

Landed 7/9 on the 3pm’s and the final game was the 5:30KO. I recall it being after a January and it was West Brom vs Villa.

Anyway Villa go two up relatively early
In the first half and I thought that was that. West Brom got one back and then Peter Odemwingie equalised in the c80th minute and then it was on.

It was the longest 10 minutes of my life and West Brom were the home team so went on the offensive, I think they hit the post as well.

Not a bad 16,000/1 to shot. And came in handy as self employed at the time and we were going on our honeymoon on February
