Neither were available though and their replacement made a great contribution to the team's clean sheet. Obviously Saka is always going to be a difficult customer for any defender and he would have felt that he had the upper hand over Dan before this game. He got past a couple of times, but nothing was ever easy for him. In the second of your examples, his cross was overhit because it was made whilst BDB was making a recovering challenge. Burn was also back to make blocks or covers for his teammates on several occasions. My only criticism would be the one he made of himself: He should have buried that header.

Agree with you. I thought he had a very good game against a top quality opponent. Saka is always going to get through once or twice, he's obviously quicker than Burn. But BDB he showed he's improved his game, as he didn't hack him down for a penalty like he did against Traore a while ago (in almost the exact same spot on the pitch)

Admitting he is pants at heading a football isn't really a glowing reference when you consider his obvious advantage of winning a aerial ball when he needs to direct the ball goal ward in attack.

Interesting he finds it amusing, it's not, because if he did manage to add that to his game he would be far more productive in front of goal, Potter demands players try to improve their game under his leadership,Burn is a hugely likeable player who has probably worked harder on his game than anyone else in the team, he must keep improving to keep his place and scoring a few goals with his head will go a long way to helping that aim as the rest of his game has clearly improved under Potters guidance.

I agree with this as well.

If or when we get more defenders fit, there are going to be some very tight selection decisions to be made. Ability to chip in with a few goals just be the thing that gets someone the nod

Great big hearted squad player. Not sure I have seen him play in what I consider is his best position, CB in a back 4. I think he is poor on left of back 3 when in one to one situations. I obviously would not make a manager because after seeing Sako go past Burn easily twice in first 10 mins I would have told Sako to stay wide and take him on. Thankfully for us and Burn he than spent most of game inside. I cant see James of Leeds or Wolves winger be so kind if Burn is playing.

but to hold this particular performance up as a 'win' is just plain wrong. He made a couple of big errors, and we just got away with them.

Every player on the pitch made errors that could have led to something. My point was that Burn's overall contribution was worthy of praise. The stats from TheOther14 seem to suggest that his contribution compared very well with his peers this week. I suspect that each of them also made errors at some point. Not all of them were in a defence that kept a clean sheet though, none of them outdid Dan on combined blocks and tackles and none of them were up against Bukayo Saka a year on from him producing a MotM and match winning performance.

All true, of course. And all credit to him for brushing off a really shaky start, to put in a solid performance thereafter.

The coaching staff of course, are not so generous, and won't only note the mistakes that actually cost us goals, when they evaluate a game.

I expect so. They'll probably also mention the stuff he did right for 93 minutes as well. They may be pleased that his performance rated statistically higher than any player on either side except Cucurella, who was able to bomb forward because of the cover Burn provided behind him.

I reckon the natural balance Burn offers us, as well as the outball he offers us when teams press us, plus the ability to get his head on a Sanchez goal kick when we're hanging on, means that Dan is going to play this season more than he's not. I think GP really rates him and amid the fierce competition for places in our backline, I don't think GP sees him as always last on the list.

It's also about the whole. Yes BDB got skinned by Saka, but his mates were back to cover him and all the while he's reciprocating for Dunk and Duffy, he'll be right at the forefront of managers mind

They will, of course. And he did plenty right, after the shaky start, as I've already said

(But honestly, those scores are hilarious - the lad coughed up two big chances, and himself wasted the biggest chance of the game - yet gets a higher mark than a faultless Dunk, the dangerous Trossard, or Lallana who pretty much ran the game. I think their algorithm might need a little tweak!)

Well done BDB, remember Saka has made technically better centre backs than him look stupid. I saw greater maturity from him than a year ago when he was against Traore, so it shows he is being coached well and is improving as a player. Once all 5 centre backs (and both wingbacks) are truly fit - I wonder who the main 3 will be - Dunk Webster and ??(Burn, Duffy, Vestman all have strengths and weaknesses)

I think this has to be the five:

Cucurella———————————————-Lamptey
————-Webster———Dunk——-Veltman————

But leaving out this lot is tough:

March——-Burn——-Duffy———Roberts

Excellent player. Horribly underrated because he's not fashionable and got skinned a couple of times by Traore

Indeed.

Also, unlike wrack-victims like Crouchy, for a very tall bloke he is beautifully proportioned. Fact.

Dunk and Webster obviously nailed on, but you can make a valid argument for any of the others for the third spot. Duffy is the biggest attacking threat and solid defensively, Veltman comfortably the best footballer, and Burn’s left foot provides a better balance.

All sorts of difficult choices for the manager to make. To start with, Webster. He's predominantly right footed, so an obvious choice for RCB. Last season he got moved to the left to accommodate White at RCB (or so it seemed) where he did extremely well. I think that he has even said he prefers the LCB role (think I read that somewhere - needs confirmation). So, do we now have an excess of LCBs? - Webster, BDB and Roberts. Even Dunk, I seem to remember, used to play the LCB in a back four.
Given that Duffy is only likely to play in the centre of a three, does that only leave Veltman as a player who prefers the RCB position? I guess Webster will be the obvious choice, even if it isn't his preferred option - I'm sure he's got the ability to adapt to anywhere in a back three or four..

So, first choice - Webster, Dunk and ? BDB, or how close is Roberts to a break through - or does he need a season, or even half a season, in the Championship frst?

Webster's position is a strange one. He's often the one to go on the left of a three, but when it is just him and Dunk in a two, he plays on the right!

With all players fit, there is no definitive first choice back line. I think you'd see any of the following three options, depending on the formation chosen, and the relative strengths of the opposition:

Lamptey Duffy Dunk Webster Cucurella

Lamptey Veltman Dunk Webster Cucurella

Veltman Webster Dunk Cucurella

Broadly:
Dunk and Webster nailed on, in any formation
Cucurella 100% first choice at LWB, and (we have not seen yet, but) probably first choice as LB in a four.
Lamptey first choice at RWB (with Veltman considered against specific threats - Grealish /Zaha, etc)
Veltman first choice as RB in a flat four? (We've only seen Lamptey tried there a couple of times, and had a bit of a torrid time away at Saints)

I would be amazed if we have more than 3 matches this season where all are fit and firing and ready to start!

I think Burn is higher in GP's thoughts than your above suggested defences. I think Duffy is the one more likely to end up as back up. I think we'll mostly see this for this season

Veltman Webster Dunk Burn Cuccerella

IMO Webby is a much better RCB than LCB (don't get me wrong he's good everywhere) but longer term I think he'll be playing in the spot Duffy is currently playing in. Veltman will play plenty as I think Lamptey will have to be eased back into the team very gradually and Veltman will play a lot of right wing back.

But of course in reality we'll have injuries suspensions etc, so they'll all be needed.
