To tell you the truth, I've got a bit of a soft-spot for Pompey.

My dear old Mum was born there at the time her Father was bangin' in the goals for 'em. It's been a long, long time since I last attended a match at FP - & that was as a neutral. I've thought long & hard about going to this Saturday's fixture & decided to give it the swerve. I'm usually well up for attending away games that have some extra 'needle', but I can't face the possibility (probability?) of getting a load of grief this time as an Albion supporter. My Mum's in a nursing home with advanced Alzheimer's now & I was very fond of my Grandfather. For once, I've decided that protecting cherised memories are far too valuable to be risked by attending a football match, so I'll be listening to the game on the radio instead.

My dislike for them became particularly acute during their glory years of about 5 years ago when I had the misfortune of working in Bognor and Chi, frankly that area should be annexed by Hampshire and the Sussex boundary should begin somewhere west of Angmering such is the amount of Sussex born Pompey in this area. I know there are Albion there as well but judging by the taxi's and Pompey shirted individuals loitering around the purgatory that is Bognor High street we are in the minority.

Its a good old fashion derby and I love that, much prefer Pompey to SCC, they have a decent travelling support like us meaning real football fans, yes a lot of idiots, but most clubs including our have those, shold be a good game saturday and I fully expecting to pick up our 1st 3 away points of the season.

I like the way they say things like "I don't need no woife, she would ruin my loife" yet still manage to sound cockney too

Also a long time since I saw it , pretty sure he was nailing and if memory serves me correct the phrase hammer and tongs springs to mind. Is it Pennant in one as well , seemed to remember a mixed race home video (may be the same one) , it involved several 2 minute spells of absolute hammering broken up by lad chat / laughing and tom foolery

Can't remember all of them but Ben Alnwick (ex Sunderland keeper was one of them). One of a long list of footballers stupid enough to video their extra curricular activities- off the top of my head, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Kieron Dyer and- most memorably, Stefan Postma the ex Liverpool & Villa keeper- spring to mind.

No grown man should EVER sleep under a duvet cover which has the name of a football club on it. John Westwood does, as seen in a documentary on him.

One of my favourite Albion moments was beating Pompey in a midweek match in about 1992 when they came to the Goldstone needing a result to make the play offs. They completely lost it that night.

Horrible ground, frightful place. Hooligan supporters.

On a par with Leeds in terms of general perception within the footballing community. They spent money they didn't have, cheated many local businesses and individuals out of money they were rightly owed for services provided, causing many extreme financial hardship, and now they have wrangled out of paying the money back are proceeding to pay actual transfer fees to sign players who are on good wages, beginning the cycle again.

It's borderline criminal the way football clubs are run - in trouble? Go into administration to avoid repaying debts, and start all over again.

Spot on. And most of their supporters were completely in denial about all of their financial trouble, accusing the media of telling lies and having it in for their horrible crooked club. They got what they deserved, but not nearly enough of it ....

The thickest fans ever, even worse than dirty Leeds.

If I hear "poor, plucky Pompey" with their "threadbare squad" again I am going to throw up.

Unfortunately I think it will be an ugly game with plenty of trouble afterwards.

I just see them as a bit tin-pot. One of those so called "big clubs" that are in a state of decline.
They will end up getting relegated before too long and join the pantheon of clubs such as the Sheffields who are "far too good" for League One and automatically demand to get promoted back to the Championship.

'So called' being the operative words. Portsmouth Association Football Club are no big entity. They've had their time in the sun and the more traditional 9k Fratton Park crowds will surely be with us once again in the not too distant future.

I consider them the Souths second team behind us. A lot of their fans are only there for the aggro, had plenty of batterings from the 6:57 crew before. I have to admit the atmosphere is always good at Fratton park. but I don't hate them as much as I do the morons up the A23.

Hate them. During the Goldstone days, especially mid 80s onward we had a good rivalry and always a nasty atmosphere. They should be out of business, filthy cheating scum, and to make matters worse I have never seen us win at Fratton in about 6 attempts. God I hope we do them Saturday.

Nothing against the fans or the city itself, but I can't stand what Portsmouth FC is at the moment. It's a shoddily run business, a poorly assembled squad full of overpaid players with no depth whatsoever (can't name 5 subs? Don't splash out big sums on 1 player then... build a squad you pricks), and a catalogue of crap owners. The prick with the bell is a sad loser, Fred Dinage is a pompous oaf, Fratton Park itself is rundown and the only encouraging thing to be said for the entire football club is that Michael Brown doesn't play for them anymore. Portsmouth, to me, pretty much represents everything that is bad about football in this country today.

Nothing against the fans though, they have to support the club whatever is going down, but right now, their club is a bit rubbish. In my own, humble, musings.
