Better than under McGhee?

Fragmented Badger said:
He may have made mistakes, but right up to the end I honestly think McGhee CARED. He wasn't just turning up for his pay packet. Compare the abuse he got to the relatively easy ride some of our current wasters get, and it's disgusting.

I never said he was just turning up for his pay packet, someone else said that. What I was trying to point out is that I want all the playing and coaching staff to care not just one or the other.

Booing constant shit performances goes on at all football grounds in the country. It's often the only way, other than not going at all, that fans can show they are not prepared to put up with it.

If you don't like it perhaps you should take up watching rugger

Absolutely, sir. However, as I said at the time, and still harp on about, the other big warning sign was the scandalous decision to give out new contracts to so many past-it players. Carpenter, Mayo, Butters, Hart, and Oatway were all kept on. Those five must be costing us at least £12k a week, and for what? I would rather see three decent players in their place. They are all so obviously past their best, and a bit of a joke, so when you combine it with 12 new youth players, this season had a recipe for disaster ever since last April. We have no middle-ground. Everyone is either a promising youngster or a stumbling relic.
Agreed. But we can't just get rid of the old guard and expect yoofers to come in and do the business. Its all harping back to the last TWO transfer windows. There has been practically ZERO investment, McGhee has failed to replace who he's driven out, so we are left relying on our past-it old guard (who, from what I've seen, do absolutely f*** all to help organise, cajole and encourage the youngsters), and a load of kids who are so wet behind the ears, the groundsmen are having to drain the pitch at half time.

Its CRISIS TIME boys and girls.

What about the 5-1 home defeat by Stoke last season? The irrelevant one!
What about the 4-1 home defeat by Crewe this season?

I think people hugely underestimated how badly it hit the players when they were relegated.

McGhee was misquoted - It DIDN'T matter that we got hammered by Stoke. We were down already and I think he was trying to soften the blow to the players. You could see how ashamed and gutted they were when they got relegated.

4-1 defeat to Crewe was unfortunate. It could have been very different had Mayo not got sent off.

We let a decent manager go and they are very hard to come by. I am bitterly disappointed that DK sacked him, whether the fans forced him to or not.

We would not be in this sorry state with McGhee in charge.

I missed hearing MM say that the Stoke match 'didn't matter' - and if he did say such a thing, it would be very unwise toward all of the people who paid the regular fee to be there it. A good way to alienate fans for a club that could use every penny that it can get.

Even I refuse to believe MM could have actually said that!

Obviously didn't go to the last three home games last year then?

I went to the Sheff Weds game and it was 10 times better than that shit today. I never got the feeling after those defeats that we were in danger of Conference footy in 3 years time.

After today I think we could easily do an Oxford.

Even if he did say that - although I didn't hear it first hand - I really feel it was to save some confidence of the young players. Should he have sent them packing for their summer break having said they were useless and not worthy of a place in the team?

It DIDN'T matter in the grander scheme of things, as we were relegated already! What is so difficult to understand about that?

As a lot of people have said, the 1-5 was pretty much meaningless as we were already down. Ok... so fans shelled out money and wanted a performance etc etc... but after a tough season like that ending in relegation, it's hardly surprising the players had nothing left in the tank for the final, pointless game.

As for Crewe, we had a player sent off. When we were a goal down (2-1 I think), we were really giving it a go, Revell hit the post and, on the break from the same move, Crewe put the game out of reach. They then hit us again on the break, but were just exploiting the space left by Albion throwing everything forward. Besides which, Crewe's record since shows they were in a false position at that stage.

Today, we created nothing. There was little effort. The defence is a shambles, the midfield invisible and the attack non-existent.

We had the manager in place to at least keep us comfortable in this division. A big hand to all those who hounded him out..

What about Luton and Southampton away ? Apparently those didn't matter either.

You speak a lot of sense. The old guard are quite blatantly shit, and do nothing to help the younger players, but then again the younger players are nowhere near good enough to win League One matches by themselves. So, what to do? Well, as you said, it all comes back to the fact that we have invested bugger all in some League One standard 25-30 year olds. Look at EVERY team we play, they all have a good 6 or 7 players who fall into that bracket, guys you have heard of, and know can do a job at this level. We have nobody like that, just old farts and kids.

Oh, in the interests of balance, we do actually have ONE player of a suitable age and ability, his name was Paul Reid:(

Quite right. the results have also taken a dive since reidy injury, although i wouldn't say it hinged on that but it was a massive loss for the old farts and kids as you say.

We will be stuck with the old farts and kids because the board will not support the manager who-ever they happen to be in bringing the players we need into the club.

For all his faults I dont think I ever saw a McGhee team play that badly, and that was invariably against much better opposition.

And before people start saying its McGhees team, that doesnt wash, this is the team that Dick Knights sales policy has given us minus that player everyone loved Mark McCammon, and a jumped up prick called Leon Knight.

It's McGhee's team.

He reduced 25 goal a season goal poacher Leon Knight to a bloke who lost a bet to Adam Virgo on the goalscoring front, by playing him on the wing, in midfield and generally anywhere but in front of goal. McGhee gained whatever limited success he had on the coat-tails of previous competent managers, and in the process kicked seven shades of shit out of the team spirit which at times was the only thing that saw us through.

You must have been watching a completely different game to the other 5000 people there on that day then...Today was shit and so was Chesterfield, but I have seen far far worse last year and down at Gillingham.

Besides - We have got a shit record at home against Blackpool and we never do that well against them.

Its no good having a nice new stadium if we have no team to go with it

If we dont sort this out now we will run out at Falmer playing in the conference

As it is 3 or 4 years at least till Falmer better make that Conference South.
This squad is absolutely dire and there is nothing there to stop the rot.

Sorry - was thinking back to 1987-88 season when they beat us 3-1 at home.
