A genre I love, but there have been so many from the original All Quiet on the Western Front to the present day.

I'm going to go for Cross of Iron. I'm pretty sure Peckinpah got the way the Eastern Front fought was accurate i.e. complete butchery.

I never thought James Coburn would be cast as a German infantry Sergeant but he pulls it off perfectly, the ending of the film is both awful and sublime...

Excellent close season thread

If I'm watching any of these I think it's the best war film

Full Metal Jacket
Lawrence Of Arabia
Apocalypse Now
Bridge On The River Kwai
The Thin Red Line
Paths Of Glory
Aliens (definitely a war film)

For sheer epic battle scenes the like have never nor ever will be surpassed it has to be Waterloo.

Agreed. I looked up a list of the best war films on Saturday - going through some of them with the kids. Watched Full Metal Jacket on Saturday.

Impossible to pick a winner really as there are so many different stories to tell about war, and so many good films highlighting different aspects.
