We (Portslade Community College) had a school tournament against Longhill in 1989 (I think) during which I scored my ONLY goal at that level.. that reason / miracle alone makes it memorable for me! - we won 4-1 by the way!

I can still see the build up now... it was virtually England Vs Paraguay (Mexico '86) when Lineker stuck out his leg to slot home.. ahem! :lolol:

Anyone from Varndean? They don't appear to have a very good sporting history until my year who won the treble and r hopefully on there way to doing the same again. The only previous success came through Russell Martin of Wycombe and . . . Tommy Fraser

I only played a handful of games for my year at Falmer in years 7 & 8.

I remember in my debut I conceded a penalty against Hove Park which was a disaster as it ended up costing us the game.

Sydney .
1972 , Greenleas Park , Hangleton .

Playing left-midfield for West Blatchington against Hangleton .
Last game of the season . Needed to win to share the League Title with Benfield . We were losing 3-1 at halftime . We came roaring back in the 2nd half to level it at 3-3 with just a few mins to go .
We win a corner in the dying secs . The corner is taken and is cleared away to the edge of the 18 yard box where I find myself perfectly positioned to rifle in a half volley into the top right corner . Its the only goal I've scored all season and shortly after the fulltime whistle goes and in celebration I'm carried off the pitch .

And , the following week we beat our arch rivals Benfield in the
Cup Final at Wish Park 1-0 to do the Double !!

Portslade 6-4 Longhill in 85 on the hallowed turf of Withdean in a cup final.

I am sure Ian Chapman played against us that day and got a goal or two.

Indeed, in his last appearance before going to Lilleshall Chappers scored all 4 for us (one man team - bollocks...) Shame, as we normally tonked Portslade.

The Battle of Buxted Heath was amazing.

I was playing for Buxted Rangers against our arch enemies Hadlow Down High.

The game was finely poised at 0-0 with 5 minutes to go. The minutes seem to fly by in a flurry of misplaced passes and general rubbish football.
Needless to say that the game finished 0-0, and the remaining supporter that hadn't fallen asleep during the game roundly boo'd both teams off of the park.
We all enjoyed a glass of shandy after the game though. Happy Days.

Definitely beating Hangleton 10-1 on a Saturday morning game back in 1983. I was playing for West Blatch and playing them was the equivilent of playing the Palace scum !!

Stinkers will be no doubt DELIGHTED to hear that I played for Buxted Cof E Primary school on many occasions, firstly in the famous yellow shirts with blue numbers and white shorts, then laterly in claret and blue, when we got a new Head and he changed our kit

Many hard fought local derbies vs Highhurst Wood, Blackboys, Maresfield Bonners, Rocks Park, Framfield.... ah, those were most definitely THE days...

I'm going to throw away my yellow shirt with 'COLLINS' on the back and replace it with a 'B NYLON' shirt.

Fields vs Sandersons. 7-6 down only a set piece left to play. I was up for a corner (goalkeeper). The ball was whipped in, I swung my leg back and tried to wallop it. The ball seemed to hang in the air for an age, and I had visions of being hoisted high on my fellow players shoulders for saving the point.

Completely missed it, but our striker was lurking beside me and half volleyed it into the net. Cue wild celebrations and Klinsmann dives into a big puddle.

True story. :clap2:
played on one of the manicured pitches on the "Dyke Field"? :lolol:

(were you in Fields?)

Not strictly speaking a school, but I represented South West Schoolboys at Cricket ( Somerset/Cornwall/Devon/Gloucester/Wiltshire) and one game was against a West Indian Under 15 side.

In the first innings the WI got 380 odd and we went in an were all out for 17!!! ( I top scoreded with 5), second innings we hit 430 odd, I hit 134 NO and we then bowled them out for 44 ( 6 for 19)

At the end of the game our coach was in tears and we were all treated to a slap up fish and chip supper at some huge public school in Wiltshire ( I was the only comprehensive school oik) It reminded me of Hogwarts!!!

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I threw a boy's coat on the floor in 1988. He'd left it on the back of a chair in Geography. I thought it was funny to do that. Then he walked back in the class to find his apparel and two things were realised without speech:
1 - i had tossed this bruiser's coat to the floor in jest.
2 - he was a bruiser and would make me pay for my humiliating event after school.

We met at 3.15. He had a gang of larger, bolder boys than me who had scabs on their knuckles and inky tattoos on their schoolbooks. Before i knew it, i was on all fours being forced to eat grass from the field for being a rebellious vegetarian and muddying a big lad's jacket. I would rather each grass than get punched, so did so for about 5 minutes. Quite tasty, that was. And a fine sporting achievement, acting like a cow and not crying at the bullyboys' feet.

First match.

Longhill v De La Salle (pre-Newman).

1969 I should think. January with snow on the ground. Longhill is near my parents - so it was one of about four games when the old man came to watch. Lee Chapman (Ian's brother) was playing for Longhill - and was the best player on the pitch. We won 13-1. As captain and full-back I felt it my duty to defend - and despite the score did not venture beyond the half-way line.

I am still not sure how we got that score - it was just our day.

Second Match.

Brighton Hove & Sussex v Cardinal Newman (local rivals). 1975.

For the 1st XI. We had never beaten them through all the years we played them. Ian Feeley organised a new kit - (the previous kit was a pale yellow "you look like a bunch of pansies") and that was the first day we wore it. Red and Black stripes (like Man City) - a classic kit.

1-1 with 10 minutes left. We were in their box and our winger gets to the dead-ball line and pulls the ball back to about the penalty spot - I was running into box and met it with a side-foot (determined not to blast it over the bar) that went along the ground and just inside the far post - beting the flat-footed keeper and a lad on the line.

Cue mass celebrations, including a punch-up on the touch-line.

Probably my best footballing moment.
