Best pub grub in Brighton

Personally I think you'd have to go a long way to beat the nosh on offer at Kemp Town's finest The Barley Mow. An extensive menu all year round of traditional favourites, enormous steaks, huge selection of fish dishes and even fresh homebaked desserts.

Snug, cosy, friendly atmosphere and the prices aren't silly either.

Their Sunday Roasts are the best I have found in all of Brighton.

Anybody think they can better the Mow?

I've said it once and I'll say it again, The Greys shits on every other pub in this town from a GREAT height, food and drink wise.

Otherwise I agree the Mow does decent enough grub, as does the Pub with no Name and the Hop Poles have an excellent chef and a really good, varied menu of proper food at very reasonable prices which is the closest to The Greys in terms of quality that I've had.

The Hop Poles is a good call actually. Top varied menu BUT I don't think it represents the value of the Barley Mow as the portions aren't the biggest and the prices aren't the cheapest. Very good quality however.

I've not tried the Greys for food but being as it's situated not a million miles away I may well do so soon. What beers do they have?

I love a bit of pub food me.

.

From memory they have Leffe blond, Timmy Taylor, Hoegaarden, Heineken, Stowford Press and Harveys on tap and a decent selection of Belgian beers (it's home to the Belgian Beer Festival which takes place in May). You should check it out, especially the Potje Pot meal which is served at lunch and between 6 and 7 pm. This time round it's...

RUSSIAN BORTSCH

This is a special version of this soup much enjoyed by Tsar Nicholas II before everything went pear shaped.
Made with duck, bacon, chicken, sausage, pork, beef, onions, celery, carrots, beetroot, haricot beans, cabbage, leeks and turnips. Served with soured cream and hot bread.

Only 6 quid and a decent meal of a winters evening if you can't be arsed to cook owt.

CHRIST that's a lot of meat. Fantastic value at 6 squid, I'm definitely gonna have to try me some of that.

What the name of that pub on the other side of the road? Any cop?

The Geese. It's alright but I haven't been in there since they have a bit of a renovation to attract the hundreds of students that live two minutes walk away. They do meal deals now I think but I'm not sure if they are any cop. Good pint of Guinness though.

It's up for sale that place, and has been for a while.

Really?

Could be a nice little earner for somebody considering Phoenix Brewery Halls is across the road and home to 300 students.

The Shakespears Head (the one just up from Preston Circus) is worth checking out for their BANGERS and MASH too.

The best bangers'n'mash deal is in the Sudeley Arms in Kemp Town: bags of choice (mustard mash, horseradish mash etc etc), beautiful sausages and incredibly good value.
