This was a common term USED to indicate doubt as to the actual truth of a statement made by a colleague or peer.

"My dad knows Arnold Schwarzeneggar, and he's coming round for dinner this sunday"

"Ohhhh, ITCHY BEARD !"

We had the same chin stroking to signify doubt but it was accompanied by the exclamation "Chinny" or the longer form " I Chinny Reckon"

I almost forgot one - the dippy kids at Priory in Lewes were called the Lomas kids after the building where their classrooms were
