I went to all these gigs. They were great times. I saw Anthrax's first ever UK gig at Hammersmith Palais, Slayer at The Marquee (this was pretty crazy) and I saw Megadeth and I think Nuclear Assault headline Hammersmith (also saw NA play Dingwalls) and a package with Kreator, Voivod and Virus at Hammersmith. I saw Anthrax more times than I can remember. There was also a group of bands like Exodus and Testament which did a 4-5 night stint at The Astoria..different headliner each night (Acid Reign supported Testment I think) and Death Angel played The Escape Club in Brighton. I also remember a band called Crimson Glory which I liked and they supported one of the big bands at Hammersmith; anyone remember them?

I remember sending a SAE (quaint) to the Hammersmith Odeon and the tickets were in the region of £5 for these gigs.

Happy days.

Crimson Glory were on the bill with Flotsam and Jetsam at the Megadeth gig i think. My mate went to Florida to interview them on his first foreign trip as a rock journo. I remember those Astoria gigs, really violent security at the Sabbat and Kreator shows. The Testament and Exodus shows were pretty cool in that run too.

Thanks for bringing up Death Andgel and Nuclear Assault too, both very fine bands.

There are some great memories in there . I would have loved to have been at the Slayer gig at the Marquee.Sounds mental . And Testament . Absolutly loved that band . The New Order , great album and the track Into the Pit just summed up those times . I saw them a few times .Chuck Billy had the dubious habit of gobbing in the air in betwen verses and then catching it in his mouth.
If there was ever a Big 5 , Testament would be my shoe in for fifth spot .
They are playing at Bloodstock this weekend just before the Saturday headliners , Machine Head. Circle Pit mungus methinks. .....Can't go unfortunatly

Ah yes, Sabbat. Thanks for filling in some gaps in my memory.
And yeah, I loved Nuclear Assault, one of my favourites.

Via these bands I got into a lot of US punk crossover stuff as well. Bands like Suicidal Tendencies (saw them at Hammersmith Clarendon Hotel), Agnostic Front, Crumbsuckers, DRI, Circle Jerks, Gang Green, Corrosion of Conformity are ones which spring to mind.

Our paths must have crossed .I have seen all of those bands .Been to the Clarendon Hotel (Klub Foot) as well. Been to many an Albion game in my CBGB hoodie to reflect the love of those US hardcore bands . Love Suicidal Tendencies and really into Agnostic Front , Cro Mags and Sick of It All.
Circle Jerks at the christmas on earth festival in Leeds '81. Gang Green at the Marquee , COC supporting Discharge at the Astoria .
Interesting PS on DRI.(have a live gig of theirs on VHS from NYC) . A mate of mine formed a band in Brighton called MTA. Musically very much in the vein of the bands already mentioned. His logo was a pastich of the DRI running man .His was a version of the disabled sticker you normally see on public toilets and the like. He amended the logo to have the arms and legs in a kicking motion. He made a load of stickers of the MTA logo and on frequent trips to London , would plaster them all around the venue to promote his band. On the night we saw DRI , it was my job to take some stickers , climb on the stage (as quite a few were doing anyway) , run to DRI's drums and stick the sticker on the drum kit and then stage dive off . Although stage diving was the norm back then , there were still some of the Astoria's finest doing their best to prevent it. All in all , about 3 succesful sticker runs were made that evening and a great gig to boot.
