Saw their first ever UK gig at Hammersmith(86-87?) .Massive disapoinment. Mustaine could not stop talking and really spoilt what could have been a legendary gig. The anticipation to this band was huge. I still have my Peace Sells t shirt from that night. Seen them a few times since , mostly at festivals . Thought they were awesome AT Clash of the Titans with Slayer at Wembley . Were the weak link at the Big 4 last year , but enjoyed their set at Download this year. Definatly an 'on their day ' kind of band IMO.

Mustaine was wasted at that show, a massive letdown. Good support from Flotsam and Jetsam though.

I was there as well!

I seem to remember James Hetfield playing a solo that afternoon . Someone threw a huge chunk of mud at him , and it somehow wedged between his hand and the guitar . He didn't flinch , he dropped the mud and carried on playing . Can't remember the song , but whoever threw it must now be very embarressed .

Yeah , seem to remember those days at Hamersmith as looking forward as much to the support as the main band. Seem to remember really liking Metal Church supporting Anthrax. Anthrax in turn supporting Metallica on the Puppets tour and seeing Danzig support Metallica on the Justice tour.
Didn't Jason Newsted play with Flotsam that night or had he just left them.

Would love to have been there, looked so good! One of my favourite songs is their cover of Whiskey in The Jar

It was absolutely amazing, we had been in the crowd getting to the front from about 1ish, and Metallica started at 9! Certainly and experience I will never forget, and their show was just out of this world

Reminds me of the old Monsters of Rock one dayers . One stage , 5 bands . No stalls. Slowly edging nearer and nearer to the main stage in time for a good spot for the main band. Unfortunatly , there was nothing to do between bands except drink beer and piss. That's not drink beer 'n' piss , but drink beer and then have a piss. Just prior to the main band , the latter would normally hit you on the head contained in a plastic cider bottle. Therefore piss options were either in a bottle and then launched into the masses or right there where you stood. Unfortunatly the front of the stage in those days just prior to the last two bands smelt a bit like a cowshed .

The last time i saw Metallica it was at the O2 supporting the Death Magnetic album. What made it an even greater experience was that it was set in the "round" which i wish a lot more bands would do. It meant everyone had a really good view, there was some neat laser lightening and the highlights were the huge beachballs and the young boy grabbed from the audience and allowed to play the one of the cymbals on the count in on 'Seek and Destroy'.

If you do a search on YouTube there is a brilliant clip of them performing 'Ride The Lightening' in Mexico with the special 3D stage effects. This is supposedly a rehearsal for a 3D gig that will be filmed later in Canada. I am really hoping that they may bring that tour to the UK as its in the round and for the 'Ride....' track the special effect was a huge electric chair suspended from the arena roof with a massive tesal coil effect.

Happy days indeed at Hammy-O. Not sure if Jason with F&J at that stage. I once saw Metallica 'support' Metal Church at the marquee. One of the best secret gigs I've ever been too as hardly anyone actually knew they were playing. A little danish flag on the drum kit was the giveaway.

I went to all three Danzig nights on the Justice tour, I have very fond memories of those days.

I understand and agree with some of what you say, Metallica always seem to be more polished, but then they are deemed to be the biggest Metal band in the world, and they look for that. But IMO Megadeth, are still a thrash band, as they were when they started. They have stuck to their guns and didn't sell out to a more commercial style.

Therefore they have a smaller following and generally tend to play to smaller more intimate crowd (festival aside). But this OP was about Albums, and with Megadeth, you can relate to the Album a little more than that of Metallica.
Mustaine's music depicts from what era of his life he was at the time, throughout his drug addiction days, the low's, the depression, and to more modern times, the political scenes, and what state the world is at.

i cannot say that Metallica music allows me to understand the feeling, it just seems to be a little misplaced, but what their fans want. At Download Hetfield was going on about the Metallica Family, but is it really a Family. NO. just a fan base.

anyway rambling over with, that is just my opinion....

I seem to remember lots of leads being pulled out of the guitars etc, so there may have been problems with the gear. The whole thing was a shambles, I was really disappointed, I am stunned that there are so many on here that were at that show and that they can all remember it too.

I'm happy to say on the subsequent occasions I've seen Megadeth they were marvellous, so I'll let them off. It's a shame that gig was a let down after quite a big build up to it.

I agree with pretty everything you say here . Points well made , especially re Dave's problems. What I would disagree with is 'still a thrash band' .Their recent output to my ears is very far removed from the early thrash albums. Technically brilliant , but in a way slightly avant garde for the genre .

Me too . Did we all get the same train home ?

No wasn't me . Had plenty of bottled piss over me in my festival career. Always best to check if the bottle that hit you was warm or cold. If it was cold , you were alright. The weirdest thing to hit me was an egg. Can't remember which year but it was hot . The egg hit me square on the neck. No matter how hard we tried , we could not shift it . The more we tried to move it the more it just spread. In the end , because it was a hot day it absolutly reeked. The benefit to me was a massive space around me . Very handy for getting to the front of the beer queue and the stage.

I went to all these gigs. They were great times. I saw Anthrax's first ever UK gig at Hammersmith Palais, Slayer at The Marquee (this was pretty crazy) and I saw Megadeth and I think Nuclear Assault headline Hammersmith (also saw NA play Dingwalls) and a package with Kreator, Voivod and Virus at Hammersmith. I saw Anthrax more times than I can remember. There was also a group of bands like Exodus and Testament which did a 4-5 night stint at The Astoria..different headliner each night (Acid Reign supported Testment I think) and Death Angel played The Escape Club in Brighton. I also remember a band called Crimson Glory which I liked and they supported one of the big bands at Hammersmith; anyone remember them?

I remember sending a SAE (quaint) to the Hammersmith Odeon and the tickets were in the region of £5 for these gigs.

Happy days.
