8 Million a transfer market for the most successful club in the country, to win 4 trophies and make 2 other finals in 6 years with the squad he inherited, if you think he isn't a great manger you are truly an idiot.

Read my post again. 8 Millions what? He's spent MORE than FERGIE. He has nowhere near as many trophies. The last 5 years he has been an absolute failure.

Who has spent less than him and won as much then??

In the last 5 years, everyone bar Man City and Chelsea has spent less (net). So, literally anyone who has won anything bar those two clubs.

His net spend was 16 million a year, 8 million a transfer market, he won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Super Cup, the Community Shield, came runner up in antoher European cup final, runner up in a Carling Cup final, got to two other European semi finals, with a cancer of a board in charge. One of the best managers in the world.

So Manchester United? I'll take your word for them having spent less but then Benitez record is not bad at all then, not the unmitigated disaster you'd have us believe. Getting to TWO Champions league finals really is far more impressive than you and a few others on here would have us believe and if you really think it was solely down to Gerrard and luck then you are living in lala land.

Benitez really is a strange story though.

I know there was a good deal of luck involved, but he DID deliver a champion league trophy. Not only were Olympiakos robbed, so too were Chelsea.

However just one year ago, Liverpool finished second under Benitez and with a points total to win the league in most seasons. At that point, he was arguably a fit Torres and one other class player from being in with a realistic chance of the title. Instead he sold Alonso and replaced him with more shite - a sure sign that in hindsight, he had simply reached his shelf life at Liverpool.

But the bin dippers are total muppets for giving him a mahoosive, expensive contract. :lolol:

So Olympiakos we're robbed because they couldn't defend well enough to not concede 3 goals in one half.

And Chelsea were robbed because they had a dubious goal given against them when if it wasn't given it would have been a penalty and the keeper sent off, and then couldn't break down Liverpool over the whole games, despite 6 minutes added on time, ok.

It'll be the same at West Ham after giving Avram Grant a four-year deal. Good manager but things can go pear shaped very quickly at that club. You'd have thought these Premier League teams would learn their lesson with long contracts.

I think his transfer policy is why people have this perception of failure of him. He was (generally speaking, and of course there were exceptions) DREADFUL in the transfer market. However, that was all forgiven while Liverpool were doing well. As soon as they struggled, it came to the fore.

I think a big part of his problem was that he never really got to grips with the Premier League. His tactics in Europe were great, he understood how the opposition were likely to operate and he was pretty good at mitigating them. However, in the Premiership he never gave the impression of a man in control. Too often against week teams he went into games with one man up front (even at Anfield on occassions), and his teams often didn't push the tempo sufficiently in domestic games.

Alex Ferguson and Rafael Benitez at loggerheads over spending | Premier League - Times Online

From The Times
March 21, 2009

Rafael Benítez has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson and told him to “check his figures” after the Manchester United manager dismissed his Liverpool counterpart’s claims that the Merseyside club have spent less money than the Barclays Premier League champions over the past five years.

Ferguson claimed yesterday that Liverpool were “well ahead of us in spending in the last five years”, but the statistics appear to support Benítez. United’s gross spending since June 2004, when the Spaniard arrived at Anfield, totals £221.95 million compared with £212.6 million by Liverpool. Ferguson’s net spending over that period is £147.90 million compared with Benítez’s £111.39 million.

i dont get it: Benitez is either a great manager who's not very good in the transfer market, or not a good manager and brought in great players. he cant be both bad manager and have bad players, and the track record of a CL win and 6 years in the top four is not a fluke.

clear from seeing the players, he's picked poorly (for the English game at least) to often.
