Wow. I'll ignore the Europa run, which is a booby prize for getting knocked out of proper Europe. Don't forget the Carling Cup final too.

He was truly brilliant. Rafa

True we should hope, eventually, to get someone who wins us 1/10 of what he has won in his career...if we get REALLY lucky

So getting through all the group stages of all these competitions etc etc had nothing to do with Benitez?

I like Wenger but his trophy cabinet over the last 5 years makes Benitez look like a World beater. How many Premier League clubs have a better haul than Liverpool?

He may have lost his way, lost the plot, whatever but he is basically a good manager and I have no doubt he'll do OK somewhere else

Luck and Gerrard, meant that Liverpool got through those groups, DESPITE Benitez, not because of him. They robbed Olymiakos in 2005 to get through that group.

And agree that Wenger has flattered to decieve, BUT he has spent a FRACTION of what Benitez has spent, desite all of Rafa constant whining about budgets.

Two Spanish titles, One CL, One UEFA Cup, One FA CUP. So half a trophy then? That wouldn't be all that great would it?

Just to be able to contest that half trophy would put us up near the top of the Premier League, so yeah I'll settle for that. I somehow doubt we'll be able to blag ourselves into the Spanish league though.

Oh right, did Rafa GET Liverpool to the Prem then? There was me thinking that they were already a top 4 club, with a BETTER squad than he's left them with.

Torres is brillinat, and was a great buy, at £20m. That's why I said a 'heap of shit players AND Torres.

Carry on.

And feel free to list all his other great buys.

I'll start you off with Reina - great buy at a good price.

You may struggle to think of [m]any more.

Luis Garcia
Xabi Alonso
Javier Mascherano
Yossi Benayoun (For the price they paid)

Then again, he did also sign:
Antonio Nunez
Lucas
David N'gog
£10 million on Dirk Kuyt as a striker then played him as a midfielder.
Robbie Keane
Alberto Aquilani
Mauricio Pellegrino
Scott Carson
Robbie Fowler
Mark Gonzalez
Ryan Babel

I'd say the shite signings outweigh the good ones..

They were also one of the 4 richest clubs, which is no longer the case, just maybe that part is not Rafa's fault too?

Leaving by mutual consent looks better on his cv. Wonder if his golden handshake will be paid into a bank account in one of the worlds tax havens ?

Although being a Brighton season ticket holder, I am also a large Liverpool fan, as my dad and all is section of his family are from Liverpool. I for one have huge respect and admiration for Rafa Benitez, and his record proves he is one of the top 5 managers in the world. He loved the club and the fans loved him, he will always be loved and appreciated, although it is hard to disagree that he had done as much as he could at the club.

Thanks Rafa.

If our manager spends a QUARTER of what Rafa has (net spend, not gross) it would be a disgrace to win as little as Rafa has for Liverpool in the last FIVE YEARS.

Benitez was a master of pulling the wool over the scousers eyes. His PR people were amazing. Whenever something bad happened, eg: not qualifying for CL, Getting knocked out in group stages of CL, finishing 7th, it was "Real Madrid want Benitez" all over the papers, just as it was a couple of weeks back with "Juventus want Benitez".

8 Million a transfer market for the most successful club in the country, to win 4 trophies and make 2 other finals in 6 years with the squad he inherited, if you think he isn't a great manger you are truly an idiot.

Who has spent less than him and won as much or more then??
